West Nile is a tropical disease that begins in birds, which pass it on to mosquitoes that then go on to infect human beings with a bite. Most people who catch West Nile do not experience any symptoms at all, but, if they do, symptoms typically develop between 3 and 14 days after a mosquito bite. About 1 in 5 persons suffers fever, headaches, and body aches, usually lasting a week or so. A far less lucky 1 in 150 experiences high fever, tremors, paralysis, and comas. Some--especially the elderly and those with weak immune systems die.

That is what made the major outbreaks of West Nile in the U.S. in the summer of 2012 so scary. The situation was particularly bad in Dallas, Texas where the West Nile virus killed 10 people and sickened more than 200. The city declared a state of emergency and began aerial spraying(飞机喷雾)of a pesticide to kill the mosquitoes

Why was the summer of 2012 so suitable for the West Nile virus and the mosquitoes that carried it? An extremely warm winter allowed more mosquitoes than usual to survive, while the unusually high temperatures in that hot summer further increased their number by speeding up their life cycle. The economic crisis might have some kind of effect: Homeowners who were not able to pay their bank loans were forced to abandon their properties sometimes leaving behind swimming pools that made excellent mosquito reproducing grounds

The severity of tropical diseases is also a matter of whether governments are able to defend their populations against infections. Dallas was not doing some of the key things to slow the spread of West Nile, such as testing dead birds and setting mosquito traps to test for the presence of the disease. The infections are thus as much related to government inaction as they are to climate.

24. What can we learn about West Nile from the passage?

A. It is spread through air and water in hot areas.

B. Its symptoms usually appear within two weeks.

C. Over 20% of people who catch it will suffer severe symptoms.

D. It comes from direct human contact with birds infected with the virus.

25. Which of the following are the reasons why Dallas was hit most seriously in the U.S.in 2012?

a. the weather; b. the local people's inaction;

c. the governments ignorance; d. the increasing population;

e. the economic crisis;

A. abc B. bed C. ae D. be

26. From the last paragraph, we can infer that Dallas_________.

A. found solutions to killing the West Nile virus

B. tested dead birds in time after the virus outbreak

C. wasn't willing to defend people from West Nile

D. didn’t take active action to fight against West Nile

27. What is this passage mainly about?

A. West Nile and methods to fight it.

B. West Nile and governmental action.

C. West Nile and its relation to tropical diseases.

D. West Nile and the conditions its virus spreads rapidly in.

A single teacher can reach thousands of students in an online course, opening up a world of knowledge to anyone with an Internet connection. This limitless reach also offers opportunities to school districts that need to save money, by reducing the number of teachers. It can help high achievers in need of more advanced coursework than their districts provide. This is especially true in small districts that offer few traditional courses to students working ahead of their grades.

A study in Maine and Vermont examined the effect of online courses on eighth graders with strong math skills in schools that didn't offer face-to-face math classes. Students were divided between online math and standard math offered in traditional classes. Both groups of students were tested at the end of the school year. The online students did better than those in standard classrooms. They were also twice as likely to complete advanced math later in high school.

But there is something wrong with it. In reality, students who complete these courses tend to do quite poorly on subsequent(随后的) tests of academic knowledge, suggesting that these online courses often give students an easy passing grade without teaching them very much.

Some researchers examined the performance of hundreds of thousands of students at DeVry University, which offers online and face-to-face versions of all its courses, using the same textbooks assessments(评估), homework and teaching materials in each course. Even though the courses are seemingly the same, the students who attend online courses do worse. The effects are lasting, with online students more likely to drop out of college online class with low grades. Work by researchers in many other colleges is in line with the DeVry findings: The weakest students are hurt most by the online learning. For those with strong academic skills by contrast(相比之下), online learning can open up amazing opportunities.

Online education is still in its youth. Many ways of learning are possible, and some may benefit students with deep and various needs. As of now, however, the evidence is clear. For advanced learners, online classes are a good choice, but academically challenged students need a classroom with a teacher’s support.

28. What did the study in Maine and Vermont find?

A. Traditional students were more likely to do better in math

B. Both groups had little difference in their performance

C. Traditional students did worse than online ones

D. Online students tend to fail in their higher education

29. Why did the findings of De Vry differ from Maine and Vermonts?

A. De Vry invited different teachers

B. De Vry involved different classes

C. De Vry used different teaching methods

D. De Vry chose students of different levels

30. What does the author think of online education?

A. It suits good students B. It has been fully developed

C. It is useful to poor students D. It should be forbidden in schools.

31. What can we learn from the passage?

A. Education needs further study in the long ten

B. Online courses influence different students in different ways

C. Traditional courses fail to fit modern education anymore

D. Online education is harming traditional courses and teachers

D

Most recycling programs accept plastics labelled 1 through 7, but in the vast majority of cases, only #I and #2 actually get recycled, a new report through Greenpeace has found. Examples of those types of “good” plastics include soda and water bottles, milk containers and other soft-Sided containers. The rest of the plastics dutifully placed in the recycling bin- including yogurt cups, plastic cutlery, to-go containers from restaurants, makeup packaging, and shipping materials, are likely getting burned or landfilled (垃圾填埋) And they may even be messing up the recycling sorting system.

“ The report looked at the data from 367 material recovery facilities(材料回收设施,MRFs) in the United States. None of the facilities recycled coffee pods. So few were able to process plastics numbered 3 through 7(due to the fact that they have “1ow-to- negative value”) that labelling them as recyclable seems pointless,’’ said Jan Dell, independent engineer and founder of The Last Beach Cleanup.

“This is clearly gloomy for most of us who have spent time and energy recycling these plastics and encouraging others to do so, thinking they were being made into new products. Many people feel misled by the many times they've heard from companies that their products are sustainable(可持续的) because they use packaging that’s recyclable. Instead of getting serious about moving away from single-use plastic, companies are hiding behind the pretence(假象) that their throwaway packaging is recyclable” says Greenpeace USA Oceans Campaign Director John Hocevar.

Greenpeace is asking the companies that have been labelling their products that contain #3 to #7 plastics as recyclable to remove that language from their packaging. If they don’t, the environmental organization will file a Federal Trade Commission complaint against them for mislabeling.

Some of the same companies mentioned in the Greenpeace report are also experimenting with reusable packaging, and that’s one creative way to solve the disposable(一次性的) plastic problem. “Reuse is clearly part of the solution, both on the part of the large companies that are producing plastic waste that they know isn’t recyclable and for individuals as well. But there is a long way to go. The next step is how we will make reusable packaging more environment-friendly, says one company manager.

32. From Para. 1, we can infer that____________.

A. people always put plastics-in the recycling bins mistakenly

B. plastics labelled 1 through 7 have been recycled completely

C. the recycling sorting system may be ruined by plastics labelled 3 through 7

D. plastics labelled 1 and 2 improve the recycling sorting system greatly

33. Why do few MRFs process plastics numbered 3 through 7?

A. Because the costs of recycling are extremely high.

B. Because it is not worth recycling these plastics.

C. Because these plastics are harmful to the environment.

D. Because it is very difficult to sort them.

34. What does the underlined word "gloomy" mean?

A. Frustrating. B. Satisfying. C. Embarrassing. D. Advantageous.

35. According to the company manager, what can we learn?

A. The public should raise their awareness o of using plastics.

B. The process of recycling packaging may face difficulties.

C. Reuse is the only way to deal with the disposable plastic problem.

D. Greenpeace hopes companies will find alternative reusable packaging.

书面表达

Nowadays, with the growing popularity of computer, students are paying less and less attention to their handwriting.

According to a recent survey, about 85. 5 percent of middle school students think their handwriting is poor. Yet for various reasons, many students don't want to improve their handwriting. 51. 5 percent of the students think that they can just use a computer, so there is no need to waste time improving their handwriting, and 32.3 percent believe that they are so busy with the study that they do not have time to practice. 10.9 percent think that practicing handwriting is useless.

In my opinion, beautiful and neat handwriting is beneficial, especially for middle school students. As the saying goes, writing style shows the man. In a word. I think more emphasis should be placed on this aspect in the future.
