In early November of 1503, during Christopher Columb us ' fourth and final trip America, his ship was seriously damaged in a storm. Columbus and his men had to live on a small isla nd for several mon ths while they tried to repair their ship and retur n to Spain.

At first, the local people on the island were very kind to the European visitors, giving them all the food

and clothes they n eeded to survive. However, as the mon ths passed, the local people became more and

more un happy with their guests, who were trick ing and steali ng from them. Fin ally the locals decided to

stop help ing. Without food or any way to leave the isla nd, Columbus ' group was soon in serious troub

Luckily for Columbus, he had a book about the stars and planets on his ship. It described the movements

of all the objects in the night sky. The book, written by a well-known German scientist, said there would be

a total lunar eclipse (月食)on the evening of February 29, 1504 and how long it would last.

Columbus worked out the differe nee in time betwee n Germa ny and North America. He the n had a

meeting with the local leaders just before the eclipse would take place. In this meeting, Columbus told them

his god was angry because the local people were no Ion ger givi ng food. So his god would take away the moon to punish them. At the mome nt Columbus fini shed talk in g, just as he had pla nn ed, the moon bega n disappeari ng.

The local leaders grew frighte ned and quickly agreed to provide Columbus with food and anything else

he wan ted. But first, Columbus ' god had to retur n the moon. Coluithbuis hedvould have to discuss

When it comes to frien ds, I desire those who will share my happ in ess, who possess wings of their own and who will fly with me. I seek friends whose qualities illu min ate (照亮) me and train me up for love. It is for these people that I reserve the glow ing hours, too good not to share.

When I was in the eighth grade, I had a friend. We were shy and too seriouse n if' about our stud
