We often hear about many disasters (灾难) in news. However, many of us still think, “Natural disasters won’t happen around me!” In fact, natural disasters could happen around anyone. Several kinds of disasters may happen in most cities. It’s important to know what to do before, during and after a disaster.

Robert Richardson is a doctor of first aid. He shares some advice on getting prepared for natural disasters.

The first thing to do is to do some research. Try to learn what kind of disasters once hit your city. Find out how people saved themselves after those disasters.

Another key point is to get ready for the basic needs. That means preparing enough water and food at home. When a natural disaster hits, you may have to stay inside your house for days!

Richardson also suggests developing an escape (逃生) plan. When a disaster happens, staying inside can be dangerous sometimes. You must think about where to go and how to get there before disasters.

Four students are talking about a question on the Internet. Is it better to use bicycles or to drive cars in the city?

Matthew 2019-1-13 20:22

I believe it is better to use a bicycle. First, bicycles are safer. A bike cannot run too fast. Secondly, cars are bad for the environment (环境). They produce a lot of harmful gases (气体). People are building more and more roads. There will be fewer homes for wild animals.

Samuel 2019-1-13 20:25

I don’t agree with Matthew though bicycles are safer. Imagine you have a well-paid job and you choose to ride a bicycle to work. Your nice clothes would become not so clean and your hair would look terrible. You would not be able to meet your customers.

Rebecca 2019-1-13 20:30

Today, we should ride a bicycle because there are many problems with cars. First, driving a car is bad for the environment. Secondly, there are a lot of traffic jams. Besides, bicycles are much cheaper than cars!

Olivia 2019-1-13 20:32

I like a bicycle better. Riding a bicycle to and from school keeps me fit. I am now running a club to help stop pollution. More and more students in my school are joining us. Get out of your car and get on a bicycle!

44. Matthew thinks there will be fewer_______ for wild animals.

A. roads B. fast bicycles C. homes D. harmful gases

45. Samuel believes riding a bicycle may be not good for _______.

A. your work B. your health C. the traffic D. the environment

46.Who is running a club to stop pollution?

A. Matthew B. Samuel C. Rebecca D. Olivia

47. From the passage we can know all the four students _______.

A. agree to ride a bicycle in the city B. are talking on the Internet

C. think cars cause more traffic jams D. think riding a bicycle is safer

C

A friend and I once got lost on the top of Glyder Fawr, a mountain in North Wales. It was snowing and we couldn’t see more than two meters in front of us. Luckily we met some more experienced walkers. We followed them and returned safely. Meeting other walkers on quite a cold January day wasn’t really so surprising, because walking is the UK’s most popular sport.

Many people believe that the popular walking brought about 20 special long paths (小路) for walking in Britain. The longest is the Southwest Coast path (1014km). The most exciting one is the West Highland Way in Scotland because it passes through mountain areas. It ends at the bottom of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain.

There are also a few basic rules (规则) you should follow when you are walking on the paths. Don’t drop litter, keep your dogs around you if there are farm animals in the area, and always stay on the path.

Remember that British weather can change very quickly, especially in the north and west of the country. If you are in Wales, Scotland or the north of England, you would need to carry enough food and water with you. It is also important to wear warm and thick clothes. Carry a map and compass so that you won’t get lost. These paths are the best way to enjoy Britain’s wonderful countryside.

48. The writer thinks it’s _______ to meet other walkers in cold weather in Britain.

A. strange B. terrible C. common D. boring

49. The most exciting path for walking in Britain is _______.

A. Ben Nevis B. the West Highland Way

C. Glyder Fawr D. the Southwest Coast path

50. If there are farm animals in your walking area, you should _______.

A. carry some food with you B. collect litter around you

C. wear some thick clothes D. let your dog be around you

51. The underlined word “compass” in the passage may mean “_______”.

A. 火柴 B. 斧头 C. 指南针 D. 口香糖

52. Which of the following could be the best title for the passage?

A.Walking in the UK B. Long paths for walking

C. British countryside D. Useful rules for walking
