Thishasimprovedmyorganisationalskills,whichhasreflectedmyabilitytocombinepart-timeworkwithcollegeeffectively.Workingaspartofateamandservingmembersofthepublichas
alsoimprovedmysocialskills,makingmemoreconfidentwhenworkingwithothersIwishtostudyatuniversity,notonlyfortheknowledgethatIwillgainfromthecourse,butalso

IfirstbecameinterestedinbiostatisticswhentheAAepidemicbreakoutinChinain200X.Asamember
oftheUniversityRedCrossAssociation,Iwasresponsibleforassistingtheuniversityhospitaltopublicizediseasepreventionmethods,distributemedicine,andcompletehealthsurveys.Ilearnedfromthatprocessthevalueofsurveydatesinsupplyingusefulstrategiesfordiseaseprediction,preventionandcontrol.Afterward,whenIservedasVicePresidentoftheStudentUnion,Iorganizedanintroductory
lectureandhealthsurveyabouthereditarydiseaseforthelocalcommunity.Itrulyenjoyedthesevoluntarypublichealthservices,asIwasabletousemyknowledgetoenhancethequalityoflifeformyfellowman.Theseachievementsgavemethedeterminationtofullydevotemyselftopublichealth
servicesandglobalhealthcaredevelopment.

Myacademictrainingtothispointhasprovidedmewithawiderangeofgeneralknowledgeandskillsrelatedtothebiologicalsciences.ThistrainingisanexcellentfirststepinpreparingfortheprofessionalcareerthatIdesire.AsanundergraduatestudentinbioengineeringatBBUniversity,Iacquiredasolidfoundationinthetheoreticalconceptsassociatedwithgenetics,molecularbiology,immunology,andbiochemistry.Ialsogainedknowledgeintheseveralareasofindustrialsignificance,includingbio-products,fermentation,andbiotechnology.Inadditiontothecomprehensivestudiesinmymajorfield,Ireceivedaswellextensivetraininginmathematicsandcomputerscience,bothofwhichwereofgreatbenefittomystudyofbiostatistics,animportantareainvariousindustrialandscientificresearchefforts.

Iamdeterminedtopursuegraduatestudiesengineeringinalargepartbecausebothofmygrandmothersdiedbecausethehospitalsdidnothavethefacilitiestogivethempromptdiagnosisandeffectivetreatment.Mypaternalgrandmothersufferedfromcancer,buthedoctordidnotknowitwascanceruntilwasalreadytolate.Afewyearslater,mymaternalgrandmotherpassedawaybecauseofasuddenheartattack.Tothisday,mymother’swordsatherfuneraltillechoinmyears:“Ifonlyshecouldwearaportablemonitorforheartdisease,andifonlytherewasaportablecardiacpacemakerinthe
ambulance.”

Onthestrengthofmystrongperformanceinthe1994NationalUniversityEntranceExaminations,IwonacceptanceintotheTsinghuaUniversity,China’stopengineeringschool.Withoutanyhesitation,IchosetomajorinbiomedicalengineeringinitsDepartmentofElectricalEngineering.Inmakingthatchoice,Ihopedthat,oneday,Icouldbemoreofahelptopatientsthandoctors,sinceadoctortreatspatientsone

Withaclearobjectiveinmymind,Imademyselfa“giftedstudent”recognizedbythedepartment.Inmyclassof32students,Iwasconsistentlyatopstudent.MyGPAforbasiccourseswas3.75/4.0andmyGPAforspecializedcourseswasashighas3.87/4.0.InmysecondyearinTsinghuaUniversity,myacademicrankingandcomprehensiverankingwereboththehighestinmyclass,andIwasawardedthefirstrankingexcellentstudentscholarshipthatyear.Iwasparticularlystronginmathematicsandphysics,
whichItookasfundamentaltoeverybranchofscienceandtechnology.

3.Myindependentresearchability

Asarecognizedgiftedstudent,Iwasoneofthefirststudentsinmyyeartobegiventheopportunityoftakingpartinactualresearch.InJuly1996,Ijoinedtheresearchgroupforbiomedicalinstrumentationandsignalprocessing,ledbyProfessorChengJiajie,anotedChinesetermEEGsignals.AjointprojectbetweenProfessorChengandtheNationalResearchCenterforEngineeringandTechnologyonApplianceforMedicalTreatmentandHealthCare,thesystemwastoconsistoftwosub-systems.OnewasforsamplingandrecordingtheEEGandotherphysiologicalsignals,andtheotherwasforreviewing
andanalyzingthesignals.Iwasinvolvedinthedevelopmentofboth.

Ifirstbuiltadouble-Tband-stopfilternetworkforultra-weaksignalstoserveasanessentialpartoftheEEGhardware.Asbrainwavesareextremelyweaksignals,onlyfromtenstohundredsmicrovolt,thewholesystem,includingthefilternetwork,hadtomeetextremelystringentstandards.Idesignedthecircuitanditscomponentsmeticulously.Afterpainstakingefforts,Isuccessfullysetupthefilternetwork.

ofmyleadershipandcommunicationskills,thedepartmentappointedmeacounselortofirst-yearstudentsintheschoolyearbetweenSeptember1996toJuly1997.Inthisposition,Iadvisedthe
freshmenonthechoiceofcoursesandadaptationtotheuniversitylife.

Interestedintheculturalandrecreationalactivities,Ihelpedtoorganize,in1995,theFirstBeijingOperaCompetitioninTsinghuaUniversity.InDecember1996,Iorganizedandparticipatedinmakingthefirstmusicvideoforourclassasourcontributiontothedepartment’sartfestival,anditwonasecondprize.

WhatIliketoemphasizeisthatIwasoneofthefoundersoftheBiomedicalClubinourdepartment.Thepurposeofitistospreadknowledgeandexchangeideasintherapidlydevelopingbiomedicalworld.Duringthepastthreeyears,wesuccessfullyfulfilledourgoalbymeansofregularseminarsaswellas
visitstovariousacademicinstitutionsandhospitals.

Ibecameevenmoreactiveinextracurricularactivitiesaftermthirdundergraduateyear.InJanuary1997,IwentonatriptoShenZhen,China’sfirstandmostsuccessful“specialeconomiczone”,aspartofasocialinvestigationgroup.Thefar-reachingeconomicandtechnicalreformstaughtmealotoutsidemydiscipline.FromJunetoAugust1998,uworkedintheIBMChinaResearchLaboratoryonlocalizationandsystemtestingforIBMWorkPadChineseApplications.Itwasanextraordinaryexperienceforme.Inotonlytestedmyselfinrealresearch,butalsoIlearnedaboutadvancedtechnologyandthinking.Duringthistime,IattendedtheIBMResearchSummerJam98,whichwasaneventforIBMResearch’ssupplementalandsummerstudentemployeestogettogetherandexplorethefutureofcomputing.MycreativitydisplayedinthisSummerJamwonacclaimfromIBMSeniorVicePresidentDr.PaulHorn.

5.SolidcommandofEnglish

AlthoughnotanEnglishmajor,myEnglishproficiencyiscomparabletothatofEnglishmajorsinChineseuniversities,asdemonstratedbymyhighgradesinbothTOEFLandGRE.IdonotjustknowtheEnglish
languagewell.IcancommunicateaseffectivelyinEnglishasIdoinChinese.Ibelievethatgoodcommunicationandwritingskillsareindispensabletoasuccessfulresearcherorengineer.MyTWEscoreis5.5,whichisespeciallyhighforChinesestudents,andmyoralEnglishisgood,too,asIhavemanyachancetotalkwithmyparents’foreigncolleaguesandexchangedifferentideasandinformationwiththemwhentheycometoChina.IwilltakeTSEthisOctoberandIamconfidentthatIwillgetanother

6.WhyIdecidetopursuemystudyabroad?

AlthoughstudyinginTsinghuaUniversityhassolidlygroundedmeforanengineeringcareer,Ihaveforlongfelttheurgencyandresponsibilitytostudyabroad.Frommypersonalexperience,Irealize,frankly
speaking,thatChina’sbiomedicalengineeringisnotyetdevelopedenough.Irememberthat,inSeptember1997whenIwenttoBeijingRecoveryCenterfor“socialinvestigation”,Ifoundalltheadvancedrecoveryandnurseappliancesdisplayedandusedthereweremadeabroadandtheexpensesweretoohighforordinarypeople.Togiveyouanotherexample,theEEGsystemcurrentlymadeinChinaforclinicaluserequireselectrodecheck-upbeforeoperation.Thisalwaysbringspatientssufferingbecausethenurseshavetorubtheelectrodeheavilyontheirscalpforabouthalfanhourforideallocation.Oneday,aprofessortherebroughtusanEEGsystemimportedfromCalifornia,U.S.A.Thissystemnotonlysolvestheoldproblem,butalsosetsupanewdetectingfunctionforbrain’scognition
ability.
Fromtheseandotherthings,IknowthattheUnitedStatehastheadvancedtechnologyandthustheoriginalideas,butChinahasqualityresearcherslikemewhocanlearntodoaswell.IfeelthatIhavenottakenthefulladvantageofmyintellectualcapabilities.Iwishtopursuemoreadvancedstudiesandthenimprovemycountry’sbiomedicalsituation.OnlybydoingthiscanIfeelbetterwhenIrecallmychildhoodmemories,memoriesofmygrandmothersdyingneedlessly.OnlybydoingthiscanIfulfilmyultimateaimtomakebiomedicalappliancespartofeverybody’slife,tohelpprovideordinarypeoplecorrectandtimely
treatmentandcarefortheirillness.

Ihaveinheritedfrommyparents’intellectualqualities.Myfather,aprofessorofPhysicsattheBeijingUniversity,andmymother,aseniorengineerofPhysicswiththeChineseacademyofSciences.Havebestowedonmethecharacterofdiligence,resolutionandperseveranceaswellastheabilitytounderstandnewthingsquickly.TheyhavebothbeentoseveraluniversitiesinU.S.A.asvisitingscholars.SowhenIwasyoung,IhadsomeknowledgeofuniversitiesinUnitedStates.MyolderbrotherpursuedhisgraduatestudiesinMIT,whereheobtainedaMasterofScienceDegreeinphysicsin1992andaPh.D.intheDivisionofHealthSciencesandTechnologyin1996.Byrealizinghisachievement,hehasgiven

Inthemeanwhile,mytalentinmathematicshelpedmeexcelmyclassmatesandgainoutstandinggrades.Besidesmyexcellentgradesinschool,IwonremarkablescoresinvariouscontestsinBeijingandafewnationalcontestsonmathematics,physics,chemistry,etc.Moreover,from1993to1998,IwontheShupinScholarshipseveraltimesbasedonmyexcellentscore.
