Unit1

Unit2

Originally, English was only spoken in England. As British conquered other countries, English began to be spoken in many other countries. Unit3

Wang Kun and Wang Wei had longed to have a wonderful bike trip since middle school. After graduating from college, they had the chance to ride bikes along the whole Mekong River. Wang Wei planned their journey carefully. They planned to begin their journey at an altitude of over 5,000 metres. A few months before the trip, they found a detailed atlas in the library and knew the Mekong River entirely to organize the trip properly. They were sure they would have fun.

Unit4

A series of abnormal things occurred in Hebei but people in Tangshan ignored them and went to sleep as usual that night. Unfortunately, at 3:42 am, the biggest earthquake of the 20th century happened, which completely destroyed the city in just a few seconds. Many people died or were injured. Worse still, even some of the rescue workers and doctors were trapped under the ruins. Luckily soldiers were immediately sent there to help survivors, binging them hope.

Unit 5

The poor black worker, Elias, sought advice from the black lawyer, Mandela, because he was concerned about losing his job without a passbook to live in Johannesburg, he was worried about losing his job. Thanks to Mandela’s kind help, he got one and continued to stay in Johannesburg to work. In return, he joined ANC Youth League organized by Mandela. At that time, black people were unfairly treated. In order to achieve equal rights, they first fought the government peacefully but failed. So they had to use violence.

Elias spent four years in the prison, Robben Island, where he was taught to study by Mandela who was also in prison. Mandela found all possible time to teach Elias. After he was set free, thanks to his education, Elias was lucky to find a job. Unfortunately, he lost his job for his experience in prison. After twenty years, Mandela founded the new government and offered him a job to show tourists around the Robben Island. Now he is proud of his new job.
