第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(ABCD)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A Short and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team. "Footballtennis, Cricketanything with a round ball, I was useless. "he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the object of jokes in school gym classes in England's rural Devonshire.
It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first the teen
went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to cycle along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set his mind on building up his body, increasing his speed, strength and endurance. At age 18, he ran his first marathon. The following year, he met John Ridgway, who became famous in the 1960s for rowing an open boat across the Atlantic Ocean. Saunders was hired as an instructor at Ridgway's school of Adventure in Scotland, where he learned about the older man's cold-water achievements. Intrigued, Saunders read all he could about Arctic explorers and North Pole expeditions, then decided that this would be his future. Journeys to the Pole aren't the usual holidays for British country boys, and many people dismissed his dream as fantasy. "John Ridgway was one of the few who didn't say, 'You are completely crazy,'" Saunders says. In 2001, after becoming a skilled skier, Saunders started his first long-distance expedition toward the North Pole. He suffered frostbitehad a closer experience with a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit. Saunders has since become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and he's skied more of the Arctic by himself than any other Briton. His old playmates would not believe the transformation. This October, Saunders, 27, heads south to explore from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back, an 1800-mile journey that has never been completed on skis. 21. The turning point in Saunders's life came when ________. A. he started to play ball games 22. What do we know about Saunders? A. He once worked at a school in Scotland. B. He followed Ridgway to explore the North Pole. C. He was the first Briton to ski alone to the North Pole.
D. He was chosen for the school sports team as a kid. 23. It can be inferred that Saunders' journey to the North Pole ________.
A. was accompanied by his old playmates
B As a good mother to three children, I have tried never to let my passion stand in the way of being a good parent
I no longer consider myself the center of the universeI show upI listenI try to laughI am a good friend to my husbandI have tried to make marriage vows (誓言)mean what they sayI am a good friend to my friends, and they to meWithout them, there would be nothing to say to you today
So here's what I want to tell you today: Get a lifeA real life, not a desire of the next B. was supported by other Arctic explorers C. set a record in the North Pole expedition D. made him well-known in the 1960s

B. he started to receive Ridgway's training D. he got a mountain bike at age 15
C. he ran his first marathon at age 18
promotion, the bigger paycheck, the larger house
Get a life in which you are not aloneFind people you love, and who love youAnd remember that love is not leisure; it is workPick up the phoneSend an e-mailWrite a letterAnd realize that life is the best thing and that you have no business taking it for granted
It's so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hours and our minutesIt's so easy to exist instead of to liveI learned to live many years agoSomething really, really bad happened to me, something that changed my life in ways that, if I had my choice, it would never have been changed at allAnd what I learned from it is what, today, seems to be the hardest lesson of all
I learned to love the journey, not the destinationI learned to look at all the good in the world and try to give some of it back because I believed in it, completely and totallyAnd I tried to do that, in part, by telling others what I had learned
By telling them this: Read in the backyard with the sun on your faceLearn to be happyIf you do, you will live it with joy and passion as it ought to be lived 24It can be inferred from the passage that

Athe author didn't try her best to work well Bthe author spent all her time caring for her children Cthe author likes traveling very much Dthe author is a success in personal life 25How did the author form her view of life?

AThrough social experience BThrough an unfortunate experience CFrom her children and husband DBy learning from her friends the author really means that people tend to

Awork rather than enjoy life Bwaste a lot in life Cmake a living rather than live a real life Dforget the most important lessons in life 27What's the author's attitude toward work? ADo it well to serve others

BEarn enough money to make life better CDon't let it affect your real life

DTry your best to get a higher position and a pay raise
C There are many ways of defining success. It is accurate to say that each of us has our own ideas of success to the extent that each of us is responsible for setting our own goals and determining whether we have met these goals satisfactorily. Because each of us possesses unique differences in genetic ability and favorable environments in which to express these abilities, it is necessarily true that we must define success broadly.

26By the underlined sentence “It's so easy to exist instead of to live" in the fifth paragraph,
For some peoplesimply being able to live their life with the least misery and sufferings is considered a success. Think of the peace of mind of the poor shepherd who tends his sheep, enjoys his simple life with his family in the beauty of nature, and who is respected because he does a good job of achieving the goals expected of him and accepted by his family and his society. On the other hand, it seems that even though some people appear to be rich in material possessions, many of them seem to be miserable and consider themselves unsuccessful when judged by their own standards of success. Because not all ventures can be successful, one should not set unrealistic goals for achieving success, but if one has self-confidence it would be unfortunate to set one's goals at too low a level of achievement. A wise man once said to a young man who was experiencing frustration (挫折)with his own professional success, “You do not have to set your goal to reach the moon in order to have success in traveling. Sometimes one can be very successful merely by taking a walk in the park or riding the subway downtown,” The man added, "You have not really failed and spoiled your chances for success until you have been unsuccessful at something you really likeand to which you have given your best effort.
28. Some rich people consider themselves unsuccessful because ______. A. their life is busy and miserable B. they are not rich in material possessions C. they set their goals at too low a level D. they haven't reached their own standards 29. From the last paragraph we can tell that ______. A. success means achieving great goals B. success comes from great goal setting C. success means efforts and favorites pay off
D. success has nothing to do with the distance of your travel 30. The purpose of the passage is ______. A. to state what our life goal is B. to talk about how to achieve success C. to give us a clear definition of what success is
D. to discuss the importance of goals
