Southwest University (SWU) is a key comprehensive university, under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education. It was newly established in July 2005 through the incorporation of former Southwest China Normal University and Southwest Agricultural University upon the approval of the Ministry of Education. SWU is situated nearby the beautiful Jialing River, and is located at the foot of Jinyun Mountain, a state level scenic spot, in Beibei District, Chongqing Municipality.

The former Southwest China Normal University was one of the key comprehensive universities under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education. Originally it was named Southwest Teachers College and was established through the merging of the former National Women's Teachers College and the Sichuan Provincial Educational College in 1950. It was then renamed Southwest China Normal University in 1985.

The former Southwest Agricultural University was established in 1950, originally being named Southwest Agricultural College. This university was established through the merging of relevant sections and departments of the former Sichuan Provincial Educational College, the Western China University and Xianghui College. Approved by the State Council, it became one of the national key universities in 1979, and was then renamed Southwest Agricultural College followed by Southwest Agricultural University in 1985. In 2001, a new Southwest Agricultural University was established through combining with the former Sichuan Animal Husbandry and Veterinary College, the Citrus Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Agriculture.

Before being united, Southwest China Normal University and Southwest Agricultural University were neighbors with only a wall separating the two institutions. Both universities had a long historic relationship, which could be traced back to their common origin, i.e. East Sichuan Teachers College in 1906.

Southwest China Normal University and Southwest Agricultural University have already cultivated a variety of graduates, more than 200,000 since their establishment. On the basis of long-term building and development, both universities formed their special characteristics in teachers' education and agricultural education respectively. The universities excel in a number of disciplines including pedagogy, psychology and agronomy. Among them, the silkworm genome research takes the lead in the world, and fundamental psychology and pedagogy have taken a national lead. Other great achievements include natural fallowing, silkworm gene bank, southwest ethnic education and psychology research, and human time cognition and so on. Hundreds of new technologies and achievements have brought with them outstanding social and economic benefits.

The following statistical data offer a profile of SWU:

l Campus area of 9,000 Chinese mu (= 600 hectares), with the facilities area of almost 1,500,000 square meters;

l A library with 3,800,000 volumes of book

l 2 state level key disciplines

l 9 first level disciplines and 66 specialties that can offer Ph.D. degrees

l 9 post-doctoral research centers

l 159 specialties that can offer Master's degrees and 5 professional Master's degrees

l 36 provincial/ministry level key disciplines, 27 provincial/ministry level key laboratories

l 5 key liberal arts research bases of Chongqing municipality

l In total, there are 11 disciplinary categories, covering 40 first level subjects.

SWU has a strong faculty team:

l 2,650 full time teachers, and 300 professional researchers

l 349 professors (research fellows), and 739 associate professors (associate research fellows)

l 113 Ph.D. supervisors, and 513 Master's degree tutors

l 1 top scientist of Chinese Academy of Science

l 2 top scientists of Chinese Academy of Engineering

l 75 state level and/or provincial/ministry level experts

l 173 academic leading and/or nominated scholars

l 15 outstanding state level experts

l More than 40 professors being members of the State Council Academic Degree Committee and its Disciplinary Sub-committee, Sci-tech Committee of Ministry of Education, Assessment Committee of National Natural Science Foundation, Assessment Committee of National Philosophical Social Science Foundation, vice director, advisor and/or members of National Committee of Teaching Supervision

l More than 70 professors acting as the positions of director, vice director, and/or executive director of the national above-second level societies

l More than 20 professors are very influential in their respective academic fields

l Over 1,400 projects/programs to be funded by "973 Project", "863 Project", National Natural Science Foundation, and National Social Science Foundation etc.

Southwest University has a variety of students numbering over 50,000. Its scale and levels are ranked ahead of other higher education institutions in the western China. Till now, Southwest University has had close communication and cooperation in research and academic studies with international universities and/or institutes from more than 30 countries and/or regions, including the US, UK, France, Germany, Japan, Australia, Russia and Canada etc., and enjoys long term partnership with over 20 of these universities.

。我校大学精神是:特立西南,学行天下。校训是:含弘光大,继往开来。自此,“八字”大学精神和校训,将引领和激励全体西南大学人“特立西南,学行天下”,“含弘光大,继往开来”,关注民生,服务社会,为建成高水平综合大学而不懈奋斗。

“特立西南,学行天下”的大学精神为我校张诗亚教授提出并与张学敏教授共同进行了释义。“含弘光大,继往开来”的校训是1928年时任川东师范学校校长的甘绩镛先生所题,川东师范学校源于我校最早的办学渊源川东师范学堂,我校雷激研究员、何崇文教授在查阅历史档案时发现,并对该校训进行了释义。

附:西南大学大学精神与校训正解

大学精神的内涵是:

西南大学生于西南,立于西南;杏坛育人,劝课农桑;百年耕耘,含弘光大;恰逢西部开发,与时俱进,继往开来。作为国家“211”工程建设综合大学,以“西南”冠之,顺天应时,顺地应民。因此,西南大学乃取西南之独特资源构筑核心竞争力,以其所学、所研、所育反哺于西南,服务于民生,融世界发展潮流。“特立西南,学行天下”即是西南大学百年办学孕育的独特大学精神的高度凝练和彰显。

“特立”源于《礼记儒行》之“特立独行”语,喻君子之高洁品质。用为西南大学精神,“特立”二字应有两解:其一是以西南大学所处西南之天然优势、以西南之独特资源养我学术、育我英才,助我“挺立”于优秀大学之林;其二是西南大学学人素以先贤儒者修身治世、宁静致远,通贯天、地、人三才之品性而“挺立”于世。

“学行”源自《荀子儒效》“学至于行之而至矣”,扬雄《法言学行》又曰“学,行之,上也;言之,次也;教人,又其次也;咸无焉,为众人。”可见,学习知识、教书育人若止于立言著述、传道授业,即属等而下之;其最高境界应为勤于践行,而后方可明辨是非,以所学为社会所用,如此,是为“圣人”。用为我校大学精神,“学”之一解应为继承传统、精于学术;二解应为继往开来、致力创新。“行”在此也有两解,一指躬行、推行;二曰德行、操行。因此“学行天下”一方面是指做学问、培养人才,使其所研究成果推行于天下,培养的人才服务于天下。另一方面,“学行天下”是指我校师生于百年中因受西南自然人文滋养而形成道学兼修、厚德养学之品质,化为兼善天下、普惠大众之行动。

即是,西南大学由其成于西南之“特立”品质升华至大学精神之一般性和普适性,以其“化西南自然人文、育实践创新英才”所“特立”之成就,“富社会国计民生、融世界发展潮流”。“特立西南,学行天下”既蕴涵了我校时空特征、独特资源之实际,也规定了我校的发展路向和价值追求。

校训的内涵是:

“含弘光大,继往开来”的校训,是1928年时任川东师范学校校长的甘绩镛先生所题。川东师范学校源于我校最早的办学渊源川东师范学堂。

“含弘光大”,语出《周易》第二章《坤 》:“坤厚载物,德合无疆。 含弘光大,品物咸亨。”所谓“坤”者,明高僧智旭曰:“顺也,在天为阴,在地为柔,在人为仁,在性为寂,在修为止……顺则所行无逆……”所谓“含弘光大”,含是无所不包,弘是无所不有,光是无所不著,大是无所不被;“继往开来”,语出宋朱熹《朱子全书周子书》:“所以继往圣,开来学,而大有功于斯世也。”继:继承;开:开辟。继承前人的事业,开辟未来的道路。“含弘光大,继往开来”,即是“包含弘厚,光著盛大,承前启后,开拓创新”之意。

“含弘光大,继往开来”作为校训,除含义厚重,寓义深远外,还来源于百年老校的历史沉淀,可谓有源之水,有本之木。而不是那种仁者见仁、智者见智、既可以编选出来,又容易变更的文字。对学校而言,要“包含弘厚,光著盛大,继承百年老校优良办学传统,开创西南大学的光辉未来”;对学校各级管理人员而言,要“高瞻远瞩,胸襟弘大,秉承百年办学理念,发扬优良传统,肩负发展学校重任,实现学校规划目标”;对教师而言,要“学高身正,为人师表,承前启后,开拓创新”;对学生而言,要“自强不息,学无止境,诚信做人,承前创新”。
