It was an Art lesson. Rachel sat at the desk watching her classmates busy preparing the water jars and paints. She understood why Mrs. Weston asked her to sit down and got Lisa to fetch everything for her. It was always a disaster when Rachel tried to do Art!

Rachel sighed and reached out to dip her brush in some black paint and—oh, no! She knocked over the jar. The water spread across the desk and drowned the paper. Lisa called Mrs. Weston to see what Rachel had done. Rachel went red in the face. She jumped to her feet to get a cloth. Her chair fell over backwards. She turned round and her paintbrush caught Lisa across the face, giving her a black moustache. Lisa was so surprised that she fell back against a wire bookstand. It came crashing down and the books went all over the floor.

How clumsy! Rachel thought as she went home on the bus. The bus stopped outside her house. She jumped up and her elbow (肘部) knocked a woman’s hat right over her eyes. Oh, no! Rachel said sorry, got off and ran indoors. Mum wasn’t in the kitchen but lay in bed as she caught an awful cold. Rachel offered to make a cup of tea but Mum would rather wait for Dad. Rachel sighed. She understood Mum was afraid she would spill (溅出) it.

“But would you go to Mrs. Willow for some cold cure?” asked Mum. Rachel turned to the door at once. “But Rachel, Mrs. Willow’s house is full of beautiful things, so if she asks you to come in, you’d better say no.” Rachel sighed and ran out.

Mrs. Willow was an old lady with white hair and sharp blue eyes living in an old house. She opened the door and invited her in. Rachel said why she came and that she preferred to wait outside remembering her mother’s warning. Mrs. Willow insisted Rachel come inside. Rachel took a deep breath and stepped in. She looked round Mrs. Willow’s sitting room and saw at once why Mum had been worried.

Paragraph 1:

There were beautiful things everywhere pretty china figures and delicate vases. Rachel stood very still, afraid of knocking something over. Mrs. Willow handed Rachel a small brown bottle. Rachel couldn’t wait to get away, feeling any minute there would be a disaster. She thanked her and turned to the door when something brushed against her leg. Rachel was so surprised that she jumped backwards. It was a cat! But her elbow hit a vase and it fell to the floor, broken. How awkward! (72 words )

Paragraph 2:

With a smile Mrs. Willow comforted her saying it had been broken before. Rachel sighed and stared at her. I did, when I was young. You couldn’t have been as clumsy as I was, Mrs. Willow said, her sharp blue eyes shining. Keep telling yourself you are a swan and it will work. Rachel doubtfully said that several times. After they cleared up the vase, they drank tea from china cups and ate cakes off delicate plates and Rachel didn’t break another thing. It was a kind of magic. Rachel smiled. (78 words )

In 2004, my husband, Joe and I worked in a design company in Arizona. One day, when we got back home after work, my ten-year-old daughter, Becky and Joe were united in their desire for a dog. As for me, I sharednone of theirs.

But why, they pleaded(恳求). “Because I don’t have time to take care of a dog.” But we’ll do it. “Really? You’re going towalk the dog? Feed the dog? Bathe the dog?” Yes, yes, and yes. “I don’t believe you.” We will. We promise.

They didn’t. Everyone wanted to walk the cute dog that first day. From day two, neither thought to walk the dog. While I was slow to acceptthat I would be the one to keep track of her shots, to feed and clean her, Mistyknew this on day one. As she looked up at the three new humans in her life, she calculated, “The medium one is the most reliable.”

Quickly, she and I developed something very similar to a Vulcan mind meld(心灵相通). She’d look at me with those sad brown eyes of hers, send her need, and then wait, trusting I would understand – which, strangely, I almost always did. In no time, she would extend across my stomach as I watched television, and snored on my home-office couch as I worked on my design.

Even so, part of me continued to reject walking duty. Joe and Becky had promised. “Not fair”, I said to myself as she and I walked. “Not fair,” I’d loudly remind anyone within earshot upon our return home.

In September, 2008, the Great Depression hit the Arizona. With that, my husband and I were both laid off overnight. During the following six months, Joe and I hurriedly rushed here and there to seek a new job, doing anything and everything we could to request employment. Every part of my life changed; no part of my old routine remained. However, Misty still needed walking.

Paragraph 1:

Upset as I was, I had to walk Misty while seeking job.

Paragraph 2:

Upset as I was, I had to walk Misty while seeking job. I had no alternative but to accompany her to the park every time she ran to me with wet, sparkling eyes. Wondering along the street, I caught sight of many people, wresting with their unemployment like me, pass by with anxiety, Misty, who seemed to understand my strain, kept walking around my legs. However, in a spilt second, she began to run around the park, barking to make herself noticed. I was too dumbfounded to react at first, but without any slightest hesitation, I pursued her hurriedly. After a long running, I eventually discovered that Misty was trying to please me in her own way. Staring at the little creature, I was seized by a strong desire to create something all of a sudden. Having returned home, I felt an urge to design some cookies in the shape of a lovely dog like Misty.

Months going by, my life changed a little and I cam to enjoy my walks with Misty. Those special homemade desserts attributed to Misty’s inspiration brought our family some incomes, which straightened our situation. The running that afternoon witnessed the change of my attitude. Now, hardly had I finished the everyday task when I brought her out. It was the brief pastime that wound me down magically. Seeing the adorable dog jumping and running with pure joy, I felt myself enveloped in cheerful atmosphere, feeling so relieved to put aside troublesome matters. Anyway, though there were loads of difficulties to fight against, life was still enjoyable and Misty still needed taking care of.

However, the man's first wife hated the second wife and her son, so she began to plot against(密谋杀害) them. For years, she kept waiting for a chance to murder them with her magical power.

One day the Sheik had to go out on a journey. He said to his son that he would return home before Bakrid and celebrated the festival. Now came the perfect chance long waited by the first wife. When the man was away, she used her magical power and changed the second wife and son as goats.

When Bakrid was approaching, the man returned home, only to find his first wife in the house. He asked her where his son and his second wife were. The first wife lied that his second wife died in some unknown disease and that her son ran away from home and didn't come again. On hearing this, the man became sad but comforted himself that it was God's will.

On the day of Bakrid, the Sheik asked his first wife to bring a goat for sacrifice. His first wife brought the second wife who had been changed into a goat. When it came near the man, it started to brush his hand with its tongue. He took pity on the goat and asked his first wife to bring another. So she brought the son goat. It also come near the Sheik and started to rub his leg with its head. Again, the man took pity on the goat. He said, "The two goats do like men. So I can't kill these two. " Then the first wife got angry and said, "If you refuse to kill all goats like this, we will not be able to sacrifice anything."

It was time to go home. “Remember to work on your class speeches for homework,” Miss Walker called as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jenny felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class. She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her. Once, when Jenny was reading out her holiday diary, Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.

Jenny watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain sort of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jenny sighed. As she turned the comer, she saw Lee’s watch lying right in the middle of the path.

Jenny knew she should just pick it up and return it to him, but she didn’t want 10 nm after him. Jenny bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. On arriving home, Jenny put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of her. “I’m going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I’ve won lots of competitions. But when I’m in a race, I’m not really thinking about winning. I’m just loving the feeling of being in the water…” Jenny laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jenny saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee’s watch really DID have something magic about it.

The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Walker asked who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved. Jenny slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Walker could say anything, there was a shout from behind. “She’s stolen my watch!” Lee said angrily, “It went missing at school yesterday.”

Paragraph 2:

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Possible version 1:

Everybody was fixing their eyes on Jenny, waiting for an explanation. Jenny didn’t answer. How could she explain about the watch and its magic? No one could understand. No one could believe. “But I saw you wearing it yesterday,” Miss Walker gently reminded him. For a moment Lee remained silent and then he apologized he had just remembered that. Jenny was relieved saying she had found it on the way home and decided to return it after the speech. Everybody was puzzled and asked why. Jenny again was speechless.

At that, Miss Walker smiled and asked the class to listen to Jenny’s speech first. Jenny walked slowly to the front. She couldn’t think properly. All round her, a sea of faces was watching. She felt so frightened and the watch didn’t seem magical at all. Suddenly she saw Miss Walker’s encouraging eyes. Jenny took a deep breath. “I’m going to talk about swimming…” Ten minutes later the whole class stood up applauding Jenny’s wonderful speech. Jenny smiled as she eventually realized the real source of confidence.

Possible version 2:

Everybody was fixing their eyes on Jenny, waiting for an explanation. Embarrassed, Jenny didn’t say anything. Dead silence suddenly fell. Then came Miss Walker’s voice. “Why is Lee’s watch on your wrist?” Jenny hesitated for a while and decided to tell everybody about the truth. However, thinking of the well-prepared speech, the magic of the watch, she changed her mind. “But Miss Walker, could I give the speech first and then explain?” She made a request in a tone of begging.

At that, Miss Walker smiled and asked the class to listen to Jenny’s speech first. Jenny made her way to the platform with every confidence. Words began to flood out of her. “How could she make it? We’ve never seen Jenny give so terrific a speech.” Whispers went around the classroom, and even Miss Walker nodded with approval. Immediately Jenny finished her speech, a storm of applause erupted from the class. Relieved, Jenny told everyone the truth, and especially the magic of the watch. “But it’s just an ordinary watch with no magic”, Lee announced.

Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.

This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money.

Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.

One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say,“You are my knight in shining armor.”

He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, “You got that right.” The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”

The ticket lady gave the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?”

The ticket lady again quoted the price. The man didn’t have enough money.

How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus?

Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.

Tom appeared on the sidewalk with a bucket of whitewash and a long-handled brush. He stopped at the fence in front of the house where he lived with his aunt Polly. He looked at it,and all joy left him.The fence was long and high.He put the brush into the whitewash and moved it along the top of the fence. He repeated the operation. He felt it was difficult for him to continue and sat down

He knew that his friends would arrive soon with all kinds of interesting plans for the day. They would walk past him and laugh. They would make jokes about his work on a beautiful summer Saturday. The thought burned him like fire.

He put his hands into his pockets and took out all that belonged to him.Perhaps he could find some way to pay someone to do the whitewashing for him.But there was nothing of value in his pockets —nothing that could buy even half an hour of freedom. So he put the bits of toys back into his pockets and gave up the idea.

At this dark and hopeless moment,a wonderful idea came to him.It filled his mind with a great, bright light.Calmly he picked up the brush and started again to whitewash.

While Tom was working,Ben Rogers appeared.Ben was eating an apple as he walked along the street. As he walked along,he was making noises like the sound of a riverboat.First he shouted loudly, like a boat captain. Then he said “Ding-Dong-Dong”,“Ding-Dong-Dong” again and again, like the bell of a riverboat. And he made other strange noises. When he came close to Tom,he stopped.

Tom went on whitewashing. He did not look at Ben.Ben stared for a moment and then said:“Hello!I’m going swimming, but you can’t go,can you?”

No answer.Tom moved his brush carefully along the fence and looked at the result with the eye of an artist.Ben came nearer.Tom’s mouth watered for the apple, but he kept on working.

Ben said,“Hello,old fellow,you’ve got to work,hey?”

Tom turned suddenly and said,“Why,it’s you,Ben!I wasn’t noticing.”

“Say—I’m going swimming.Don’t you wish you could? But of course you’d rather work — wouldn’t you?Of course you would.”

Tom looked at the boy a bit,and said “Why do you call work?”

“Why,isn’t that work?”Tom went back to his whitewashing, and answered carelessly.

“Well,maybe it is,and maybe it isn’t.All I know is,it suits Tom Sawyer.”

“Oh come, now, you don’t mean to say that you like it?”The brush continued to move.

“Like it?Well,I don’t see why I shouldn’t like it.Does a boy get a chance to whitewash a fence every day?”

Ben stopped eating his apple.Tom moved his brush back and forth, stepped back to look at the result, added a touch here and there, and stepped back again.Ben watched every move and got more and more interested.Soon he said,“Say,Tom,let me whitewash a little.”

Tom thought for a moment, was about to agree;but he changed his mind.

“No—no—it won’t do,Ben.You see,Aunt Polly wants this fence to be perfect. It has got to be done very carefully.I don’t think there is one boy in a thousand, maybe two thousand, that can do it well enough.”

“No—is that so?Oh come,now—let me just try.Only just a little.” “Ben,I’d like to,but if it isn’t done right,I’m afraid Aunt Polly...”

“Oh,I’ll be careful. Now let me try.Say—I’ll give you the core of my apple.”

“Well,here—No,Ben,now don’t.I’m afraid...”

“I’ll give you all of it.”

Paragraph 1:

Tom gave up the brush with unwillingness on his face, but joy in his heart. And while Ben worked at the fence in the hot sun,Tom sat under a tree, eating the apple, and planning how to get more help. There were enough boys. Each one came to laugh, but remained to whitewash.By the time Ben was tired,Tom sold the next chance to Billy for a kite;and when Billy was tired,Johnny bought in for a dead rat and so on,hour after hour. And when the middle of the afternoon came,Tom had won many treasures.

Paragraph 2:

And he had not worked. He had had a nice idle time all the time, with plenty of company—and the fence had been whitewashed three times. If he hadn’t run out of whitewash,Tom would have owned everything belonging to his friends. He had discovered a great law of human action, namely, that in order to make a man or a boy want a thing,it is only necessary to make the thing difficult to get.

Boys like to be considered to be bravebut what kind of things can be considered to be braveIt is not a question that can be answered by wordsbut by the actual deed.A boy with the name Henry gave us a good example.Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after schoolthey saw some people fighting in the street corner.Ronny said excitedly“Some people are fightingLet's go and have a look”But Henry refused“It's none of our business. We'd better go home and don't get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me.”

“You are a cowardand afraid to go”said Ronnyand off he ran to the spot with some other boys.Henry had to go home alone and didn't think about it anymore.

But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then onthey looked down upon Henry and didn't want to play with him.

Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Ronny for his rude behaviorbecause he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deservedand that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong.Thushe just ignored the other boys' laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as well.HoweverRonny didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore.Insteadhe had his new friends who also thought Henry was a coward.Every day after schoolthey didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.

One winter Sunday, my little sister, Colleen, and I built the greatest snowman ever. We gave him a carrot nose, beautiful hat, cozy scarf and gloves. He was a masterpiece(杰作).

The next morning when looking outside, we smiled lovingly at him over our meal. We gave him a high-five as we passed by on our way to school. A lot of kids went past our house, so he was the hot topic at our school that morning. It was our pride!

The day dragged on until finally we could rush home. But as our yard came into sight, we saw something wrong. The snowman was gone! We only found a broken stick here, a torn glove there and balls of snow everywhere. Worst of all, the snowman’s once-proud carrot nose lay limp(无力的)and half-eaten.

What had happened? We were both astonished and angry. But then, we were only kids, who wouldn’t have anything taking away our happiness. Actually we knew only one thing: Our snowman would rise again. And so we rebuilt him.

The next day we came home to find another mess on the front lawn(草坪). For the rest of the week, the destruction was repeated daily. Each afternoon we’d return to find our snowman had fallen apart, and then we built again.

By Saturday morning, we had a plan. We borrowed a really big bucket (水桶) from Mom, filled it with water and left it outside. The next morning, it was frozen solid. We packed snow all around the ice block as the base (底座)of the snowman. Then we built the other parts of it once again. The trap was set, and we waited for the snowman bullies(破坏者)to come.

Paragraph 2:

续写范文:

Monday morning, hiding behind the window, we soon saw what we were waiting for. It turned out that there were three of them from our school. They sneaked up on our snowman and sneered. Taking their places on either side, they pulled back their legs to deliver powerful kicks. But the moment they hit the hard ice block of the base, sneers turned into shock, then agony and tears. They howled and cursed, gritting their teeth and stomping their feet.

Seeing their pained look, we couldn’t help laughing. They were too funny as they hopped away holding their damaged feet. We just couldn’t contain our happiness and excitement. With a hearty laugh, we came out of hiding and sprang into the yard from inside the house. “An eye for an eye! Justice done!” We yelled behind them. And that was the end of our problems with the snow bullies. Ever since then, our snowman was kept guarded and intact until it happily melted into spring water and finally wove into our sweetest childhood memories

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 a. m. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.

I walked to the door and knocked, "Just a minute," answered a weak, elderly voice.

After a long time, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.

I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly towards the car.

She kept thanking me for my kindness. "It's nothing," I told her. "I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated."

"Oh, you're such a good man." She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, "Could you drive through downtown?"

"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly.

"Oh, I'm in no hurry," she said. "I'm on my way to a hospice  (临终医院). I don't have any family left. The doctor says I don't have very long. "

I quietly reached over and shut off the meter (计价器). For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.

Sometimes she'd ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

At dawn, she suddenly said, "I'm tired. Let's go now." We drove in silence to the address she had given.

"How much do I owe you?" she asked.

"Nothing." I said.

"You have to make a living," she answered. "Oh, there are other passengers," I answered. She said thanks to me, but she looked so sad.

The next day, I was on my way to visit her. The old woman told me that she used to be a millionaire. She became immersed in making money. She was the owner of a particular building we saw last night. How sadAt last, the old woman said to me, “Life is short, but please be in no hurry. Though everyone has to earn money to make a living, always remember that family is the most important thing to you,” After a long silence in the darkness, I nodded hard.

【答案】

When he got to the front of the roomhe stood directly in front of the little girl and held out his arms. His hands and arms were terribly scarred.The_little_girl cried out“This is the man who rescued me” With a leapshe threw her arms around the man’s neck. She buried her face in his shoulder and sobbed for a few moments. Then she looked up and smiledstating happily she would live with him.

When asked about her choicethe girl gave people the reasons firmly. She said in a low but determined voice“I really desire to get a_good_education that will give me chances to live my dreams.BesidesI know that money means a lot to me since I have no relatives to rely on.Butit’s the man who saved my life when I was desperately facing a_fire like that.Without himI wouldn’t be herewaiting for a new choice.I hope that I can do whatever I can to pay back his kindness.”
