National University of Singapore can be traced back to the King Edward VII College of Medicine established in 1905 and Raffles College established in 1927, in 1949 two colleges merged into the University of Malaya. In August 1980, the University of Singapore and Nanyang University established in 1956 formally merged into National University of Singapore.

At the end of 20th century, the school one after another established the College of System Sciences, successfully connected fiber-optic network in the school, invented the most advanced video conferencing technology and so on. In 1993, President Ong Teng Cheong became a new term chancellor. Starting from the School of Management the semester unit elective system was launched.
