Unit5 What were you doing when the rainstorm came?
Good morning! Teachers and judges. I’m Nie Qin. It’s my great honor to stand here to share my teaching ideas with you. Today I’m going to talk about the first period in Section A of unit 5 What were you doing when the rainstorm came?, Which is taken from Go for it, Book4. My presentation consists of six parts: analysis of the teaching material, analysis of the students, teaching methods, learning methods, teaching procedures and blackboard design.
Part One Analysis of the teaching material
一、Status and Function
This unit is mainly about telling past events using the past continuous tense. Let the students talk about what people were doing when the relevant events happened. The content of this unit is closely related to students’ daily life, so it’s easy to encourage them to communicate with others by using what they have learned in this class.
二、 Teaching aims and demands
1. Knowledge Objects
Master new words, phrases and key sentences.
Master the past continuous tense.
2. Ability Objects
How to use the past continuous tense in the adverb clause of time leaded by when.
3. Moral Objects
Lead Ss to learn the sense of self-protection in time of difficulty.

Master the sentence pattern of past progressive tense.
How to use the past progressive tense in the adverb clause of time leaded by when.
Part Two Analysis of the students
The Ss have learned simple continuous tense and they can express their thought and communicate with each other in English well. And all the Ss will be interested in the topic about their past experience,which is related to their real life. It’s helpful for our study of this lesson.
Part Three Teaching methods
1. Communicative teaching method
2. Situational teaching method
3. “Task-based”teaching method
As we all know: the main instructional aims of learning English in the Middle School is to cultivate students’ abilities of listening, speaking, reading, writing and their good sense of the English language. So in this lesson I’ll mainly use “Communicative” teaching method, “Situational” teaching method and“Task-based”teaching method.

Part Five Teaching procedures
Step 1 Warming up
Greetings between the teacher and the class.
Free talk about the weather.
Step 2 Revision and Discussion
Show some pictures and get Ss to revise the simple progressive tense by saying what he/she is doing.
Lead Ss to describe the pictures using the past progressive tense bygiving the past time.
Summarize the structure of past continuous tense and let Ss make sentences.
Step 3 Presentation (1a-1b)
Give pictures and guide to say the new word: rainstorm
Watch a video and introduce the topic: What were people doing when the rainstorm came?
Look at three pictures and ask Ss to answer the questions using past progressive tense.
Make Ss do 1a and check the answers.
Listen to 1b and circle the correct responses. Then, check their answers.
Step 4 Practice in 1c
Ss work in pairs to talk about what the people in 1a doing at the time of the rainstorm.
Ask four pairs to role play the conversations.
Step5. Group work
Get the students to work in groups to talk about the pictures and make up conversations.
Invite group leader pairs to act it out.
Step6. Report
Divide Ss into groups and choose a reporter for each group.
The reporter interviews the group members with “what were you doing when the rainstorm came? ” and make a report.
Step7. Summary
Get students to tell us what they have got in the class.
Step8. Homework
1.Remember the words and phrases in this lesson.
2.Learn to tell past events using the past progressive tense.
