OnMay4,1919,reformistzealfoundfocusinaprotestbyBeijing‘sstudentsagainsttheVersaillesPeaceConference‘sdecisiontotransferformerGermanconcessionsinChinatoJapan.
Aftermorethanamonthofdemonstrations,strikes,andboycottsofJapanesegoods,thegovernmentgavewayandrefusedtosignthepeacetreatywithGermany.
ThemovementspurredthesuccessfulreorganizationoftheNationalistPartyandgavebirthtotheChineseCommunistParty.SeealsoTreatyofVersailles.
