I hid the long black bag in the garage two days ago. Tonight, in the dark, I would finally take

it away. If everything went OK, it would be done by morning. But I had to be sure no one, not

even my wife, saw me.

It was more difficult to get away from the party than I expected. I said that the children were

tired and needed to get to bed. It was partly true. But the main reason for leaving was that I wanted

to complete my plan.

First I had to get the kids to sleep. That was never easy at any time and tonight it was even

more difficult. The eldest one wanted to know why we left the party early. I told him 10:30 pm

was not early. As usual, I read them a bed time story, but I had to stop myself reading too quickly

or they would learn my secret.

Silence finally came, and feeling like a thief in the night, I went out of the house and into the

garage. Taking one end, I pulled the bag out from its hiding place and took it into the garden. I was

worried that my neighbours might see me and call the police.

It was already eleven o clock. By the light of the moon I started working, trying to make as

little noise as possible. And that was not easy with a saw ( 锯子) and a hammer (锤子).

After much hard work, I finally completed my work. I looked down at my watch. It was

exactly 4:00 am. Then I went inside to have a shower and get a few hours of sleep. It wouldn

long now before the kids would rush into my room and wake me up to tell me about the new

tree-house Father Christmas brought them this year.

58. Why did the man feel nervous?

A. He left the party too late.

B. He was afraid of the darkness.

C. He didn t know where the black bag was. D. He worried that others would know his secret.

59. The underlined word they inParagraph 3 refers to_______.

A. thieves B. parents C. children D. neighbours

60. In what order did the man do the following?

a. Read the kids a story. b. Had a shower. c. Worked in the moonlight.

d. Pulled the bag from the garage. e. Went to a party.

A. e-d-a-b-c B. e-a-d-c-b C. a-b-e-d-c D. a-e-d-c-b 61. How would the children feel when they saw the man s work?

A. Interested. B. Excited. C. Tired. D. Angry.

D

Most people around the world are right-handed. This also seems to be true in history. In 1799,

scientists studied works of art made at different times from 1,500 B.C. to the 1950s. Most of the

people shown in these works are right-handed, so the scientists guessed that right -handedness has

always been common through history. Today, only about 10% to 15% of the world s population is

left-handed.

Why are there more right-handed people than left-handed ones? Scientists now know that a

person s two hands each have their own jobs. For most people, the hand is used to find things or

hold things. The right hand is used to work with things. This is because of the different work of

the two sides of the brain. The right side of the brain, which makes a person hasnds and eyes

work together, controls the left hand. The left-side of the brain, which controls the right hand, is

the centre for thinking and doing problems. These findings show that more artists should be

left-h anded, and studies have found that left-handedness is twice as common among artists as

among people in other jobs.

No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed instead of left-handed.

Scientists have found that almost 40% of the people become left-handed because their main brain

is damaged when they are born. However, this doesn htappen to everyone, so scientists guess

there must be another reason why people become left-handed. One idea is that people usually get

right-handed from their parents. If a person does not receive the gene( 基因) for right-handedness,

he/ she may become either right-handed or left-handed according to the chance and the people

they work or live with.

Though right-handedness is more common than left-handedness, people no longer think

left-handed people are strange or unusual. A long time ago, left-handed children were made to use

their right hands like other children, but today they don t have to.

62. How many people in the world are left-handed now?

A. Less than one sixth. B. More than a half. C. About 40% D.The passage doesn t tell us.

63.Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined word damagedin this

passage?

A. knocked B. changed C. broke D. harmed

64. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

A. No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed.

B. Left-handedness is cleverer than right-handedness.

C. Today children are not made to use their right hands only.

D. Scientists think there must be some reason why people become left-handed. 65. The best title for this passage is _______.

A. Scientists New Inventions B. Left-handed People

C. Which Hand D. Different Brains, Different Hands

六、任务型阅读 (共 10 小题;每小题 1 分,计 10 分)(每空一词)

You have studied hard in class, done all of your homework, and you think you have

understood the material, but then the day of the test comes. Suddenly, you feel so nervous that you

cant answer the questions. If this sounds like you, you may have a case of test anxiety--- the

nervous feeling that people sometimes get when they re about to take a test.

Test anxiety can be a real problem when someone is so stressed out over a test that he or she cant focus on the test questions and do his or her best work. Feeling ready to meet the challenge,

though, can keep test anxiety at a manageable level.

Use a little stress to your advantage. Stress is a signal that helps you prepare for something

important that is about to happen. Instead of reacting to the stress by worrying or complaining

about the test with friends, let stress remind you to study well before a test.

Ask for help. If having a test stresses you out so much that your mind goes blank and causes you to miss answers that you know, then your level of test anxiety probably needs your care. You should talk to your teacher if you get extreme test anxiety.

Be prepared. Some students think that going to class is all it takes to learn and do well in

tests, but there is much more to learni ng than just hoping to take in everything in class. That is

why good study habits and skills are so important ---and why no amount of cramming ( 临时死

记硬背 ) or study the night before a test can take the place of the deeper level of learning that

happens over time with regular study.

Also, take care of your health--- by getting enough sleep, exercise, and eating well before a

test ---can help keep your mind working at its best.

Everything takes time and practice, and learning to beat test anxiety is no different. It won t

go away overnight, but facing and dealing with test anxiety will help you deal with stress

management, which is a valuable skill in many situations besides taking tests.

Learn to fight 76 test anxiety

It is a 78 feeling that people sometimes get when they are

about to take a test.

77 is test anxiety?

It can be a 79 problem.

1. Use a little stress to your advantage. Stress can 81 you to

study well before a test.

Conclusion as other things.

Facing and dealing with test anxiety is a valuable 85 .
