Personal Statement
“What a naughty girl! You must always keep what I am about to say in your mind. This abacus is so important to me that the loss of it equals to the loss of my job for making a living.” This was what my grandfather told me seriously after I broke his abacus when I was a child. He was the financial director in his company so that abacus was the most vital tool to him when calculators were not widely used. Since then, accounting has been a sacred concept in my mind, I learned the importance of accountant in a company from many receipts and seals in grandfather’s desk and the central location of his office in his company.
I started to learn professional knowledge about accounting systematically when I entered university and focused on the major of ACCA. Apart from double-entry accounting and financial statement, I also mastered the knowledge of financial management, corporate governance, risk management and professional ethics. And I passed the national exam of ACCA, this is all because of my own way to study, I never took notes but pondered over what teachers said in class and took notes after class based on my memory as the review of the knowledge that teachers taught me.
Innovation and carefulness are also my great qualities. In my third year in university, teacher required us to research on the bribery case of Siemens in groups and make report and presentation after research. We chose the perspective of professional ethics of management rather than construction structure and risk management like other groups as our research topic and we used the knowledge of Kohlberg’s cognitive moral development model to analyze the personal ethics factor and corporate social responsibility proceeded from stakeholders. We can’t allow any mistakes so that every link was crystallized our carefulness and patience. Finally, we used the software Prezi who are more visual other than Power Point to show our result of research and won everyone’s praise.
Among all the competitions and activities I took part in during university, the CIMA Global Business Challenge in 2013 was the most meaningful one. Before that, I formed a team to take part in CIMA in 2012 once. Because of the inappropriate arrangement of team members, we failed. The results taught me that as a team leader, I should arrange each member according to their ability and make everyone do their best. So, we started over again in 2013. In preliminary contest, we were required to make a report of a toy company. Combining with the company’s business scope, supply chain, financial condition, personnel aspects and several projects such as launch and
purchase plan, we summed up seven problems to research on and allocating them to each member appropriately. We discussed and deliberated every night to deal with the problems and made solutions together. There were arguments during our discussion inevitably, we consulted some authorities to give us some useful suggestions and help us deal with arguments. Finally we finished the report of more than 20 pages after ten days. We had confidence in our report because of the effort we made. Then we cut out the duck and entered the top 6 in east china division. Unfortunately, we must take the national exam of ACCA at the time of final match. We had to be discriminating so we withdrew from the competition at last. We all think that the process we worked together is the most precious experience we should treasure.
During undergraduate years in China, I learned many knowledge about accounting from books but didn’t have chances to put these knowledge into practice. Thus, I want to get more opportunities to improve my practical skills during my graduate years abroad. I also want to find a part-time job to get some internship experiences.
After my graduate schooling, I prefer to work in audit company, such as the big four accounting firms, to promote my profession skill in accounting and temper my will. I believe I can improve myself better under high pressure in these top companies. Financial services industry is also an field I desire to enter in the future. Now I am working in CBC. Doing cash business and non-cash business, dealing with clients’ consultations, rechecking the cash business and promoting credit card and Insurance are my main job. I have a great mind to make up my deficiency in finance by the study during graduate years. The leading position and family culture philosophy of Citibank attracts my eyes extremely. So the Citibank is also a perfect choice for me to make efforts to work in. Now I am ready to start my graduate study abroad to enrich myself.
