ThehistoryofChinesecharactersdatesbacktoancienttimes,withahistoryofatleastseveralthousandyears.Therearemanytalesandlegendsabouttheoriginofhanzi,Chinesecharacters:thereisCangjie,thelegendaryinventorofChinesecharacters;theancientpracticeofknot-tying:theeighttrigrams;andancientpaintinglegends,tonameafew.
Itisgenerallyagreedthathanzibeganassimplepictures,imagesthattheancientChinesepeopledrew,painted,orcarvedtodescribenatureortheirlives.Otherancientculturesdevelopedpicture-basedwritingsystemsaswell,suchasthehieroglyphsofancientEgyptorthescriptoftheancientMayancivilisation.Hanzi,

however,istheonlyoneoftheseancientwritingsystemstosurvive.Today,Chinesecharactersaretheoldestcontinuouslyusedsystemofwritingintheworld.
ResearchersgenerallyagreethattheoldestsymbolsrecognisableasChinesecharactersarethosefoundonancientoraclebones.These3000-year-oldsymbols,knownasjiaguwen,werecarvedonturtleshellsorbonesofanimals.ThejiaguwencangiveallofusinthemodernerainsightintohowancientChinesesawtheworldaroundthemandintotheirgreatcreativityinexpressingtheirobservations.
Take,forexample,themoderncharacterjia,meaninghomeorfamily.Thejiaguwencharacterlookslikeahousewithanicepiginside,originatingfromtheancientideathatagoodfamilyhomehasplentyfood.Overthousandsofyears,thishanzievolvedintoavarietyofdifferentformsbutfinallydevelopedinamorestablemanneraftertheunificationofChinaunderEmperorQinshihuang.
WhenyoufirstlookatChinesecharacters,youwillmostlikelyfeelthattheyareverycomplicatedHowever,ifyouknowjustalittleabouthowthesecharactersareformed,youwillfindthattheyarenotnearlyasdifficultastheyseem.About80%ofChinesecharactersarecomposedofsmallerparts,knownasradicals,whicharecombinedinmanydifferentwaystoformtensofthousandsofhanzi.Fortunatelyyouneedtoknowonlyabouttwoorthreethousandcharactersforuseindailylife.
ChinesecharactersandChinesecultureareinseparablylinked.China'sunifiedwritingsystemformsastrongbridgelinkingtheChinesepeopleandcultureofthepresentwiththoseofthepast.Nomatterwhenorwhereyoulive,ifyoucanreadChinese,youcanreadancientChineseclassics.Itistrulyanamazingthingtobeabletohearthethoughtsandobservationsofpeoplefromthousandsofyearsago.

AsChinatakesitsplaceintheinternationalcommunity,theChinesewritingsystemhasspreadtoothercountries.Today,manyinternationalstudentsarestudyingChinese,boththespokenandwrittenlanguage,andarecomingtoappreciateChinasfascinatingculture.And,asChina’scultureandsocietyhavecontinuedtodevelop,theamazinglyversatileChinesecharacters(hanzihavebeenadaptedforuseindigitalformatoncomputersandotherdevicesAndsowrittenChineseliveson,spreadingChineseculturewhereverItgoes.
