Spring Festival

The Spring Festival is the most important festival for Chinese people. Many people return home for this festival. The spring festival falls on the first day of the first lunar month. People usually decorate the doors and windows with red paper cuts because red means good luck. People usually clean housetoo because they want to sweep away bad luck. Children can get some new clothes or presents from their parents and grandparents. The Spring Festival finishes at the Lantern Festival after two weeks.

春节是中国人民最重要的节日。许多人这个节日返家。春节在每年农历11来临。人们通常色的剪纸装饰门窗,因为红色代表好运。人们通常也打扫房子,因为他们想要扫除坏运气。孩子们可以父母和祖父母那收到一些新衣服或礼物。春节两周后的元宵节结束。

Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival, also called the Duanwu Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the lunar calendar. For thousands of years, the festival has been marked by eating zong zi and racing dragon boats. The festival is best known for its dragon-boat races, especially in the southern provinces where there are many rivers and lakes. This regatta commemorates the death of Qu Yuan , an honest minister who is said to have committed suicide by drowning himself in a river.

龙舟,又称端午节定在每年农历的五月五日。几千年来,人们都保持着在这天吃粽子和赛龙舟的习惯。这个节日最为人熟知的就是龙舟竞赛,尤其在有许多河流和湖泊南方各省。赛舟会是为了纪念古代忠臣屈原,他对楚国前途感到绝望,投河以死明志。

Mid-Autumn Day

Celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month in Chinese lunar calendar, the Mid-Autumn Day usually comes sometime between the second week of September and the second week of October. Mid-Autumn Day is a time when people celebrate the harvest, enjoy the getting-together with families and friends and appreciate moon cakes and the most beautiful moon. A moon view is a must in the Mid-Autumn Day when the moon is especially round and bright.

National Day

The National Day is on October 1st. It is the birthday of our great motherland---China. On October 1st, 1949, Chairman Mao declared the founding of the People's Republic of China , which is the greatest change in China’s history. From 1950 to 1959, large-scale celebrations were held on the National Day and at the same time Big Parades were held. Then the Big Parade stopped. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, on October 1st, 2009, the State Council and the Central Military Commission held a Big Parade and a civilian parade in Tiananmen square.

Tree Planting Day

March 12th is the anniversary of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's death. Dr. Sun Yat-sen had attached great importance to forestry. He served as provisional president of the Republic of China soon after the establishment of the Nanjing Government. On May1912the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry was established, which was in charge of the national forestry administrative affairs. On July1915, the Government has stipulated that the annual "Qingming" as Tree-Planting Day. On Tree Planting Day, people plant many trees to protect the environment.

312日是孙中山先生逝世纪念日。中山先生生前十分重视林业建设。他任临时大总统的中华民国南京政府成立不久,就在19125月设立了农林部,管全国林业行政事务。19157月,政府又规定将每年清明定为植树节。每年植树节,人们种植许多树木来保护环境。

Christmas

Christmas is a Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas Day comes on December 25th. It is important in Western countries. On this day, many go to church, where they take part in special religious services. They go back home to get together for a big dinner. During the Christmas season, they also exchange gifts and decorate their homes with holly, mistletoe, and Christmas trees.

圣诞节是基督教的节日,祝耶稣基督的诞生。圣诞节在每年的十二月二十五日是西方国家重要的节日。在这一天,许多人去教堂参加特别的宗教仪式。同日人们回家相聚,吃一顿丰盛的晚餐。在圣诞节期间人们也交换礼物,并用冬青、槲寄生和圣诞树装饰家里。


Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving Day is on the fourth Thursday of November each year. Thanksgiving Day is one of the most popular festivals in America and it’s a day for expressing thanks for the good things in life, especially family and friends. For many Americans, Thanksgiving Day is the only time of year when all members of a family gather together. On Thanksgiving Day, family and friends enjoy a long day of cooking, eating, and talking. The Thanksgiving meal almost always includes turkey meat with a bread mixture cooked inside. Other traditional foods are sweet potatoes, cranberries, and pumpkin pie.

感恩节是在每年11月的第四个星期四。感恩节是美国最受欢迎的节日之一,人们在这一天表达生活中的美好事物,尤其是对亲人、朋友的感谢对许多美国人来说,感恩节是中唯一所有家庭成员聚在一起的日子。在感恩节那一天,家人和朋友享受着一整天的烹调、美食和聊天。感恩节大餐几乎总是都包括火鸡,火鸡肚子里会塞上面包等作料一起。其他传统食物有红薯,小红莓和南瓜派。

Halloween

Halloween is celebrated on October 31st. On Halloween, children dress up in funny or scary costumes and go "trick or treating" by knocking on doors in their neighborhood. The neighbors are expected to respond by giving them small gifts of candy or money. On Halloween, it was believed that the boundaries between our world and the world of the dead were weakened, allowing spirits of the recently dead to cross over and possess the living. Therefore people light up Jack-o'-lanterns, dress up and wear masks to scare away the ghost.

Easter

Easter is a religious holiday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. According to Bible, Jesus Christ resurrected on the third day after The Crucifixion. Christians celebrate it on Easter. Easter egg is the most typical symbol of Easter because ancient people regarded egg as a symbol of fertility and resurrection. People often dye eggs red to represent the blood of Jesus crucifixion and the joy of Jesus’ resurrection. Rabbit is also a symbol of Easter. Now every Easter, candy stores in America always sell Easter Bunny and Easter eggs made of chocolate.

复活节是庆祝耶稣基督复活的一个宗教节日。根据圣经,耶稣基督在受难后的第三天复活。基督徒们在复活节庆祝它。蛋是复活节最典型的象征因为古时人们常把蛋视为多子多孙和复活的象征。复活节人们常把蛋染成红色,代表耶稣受难时流的鲜血,同时也象征复活后的快乐。兔子也是复活节的象征。现在每逢复活节,美国大小糖果店总要出售用巧克力制成的复活节小兔和彩蛋。

International Children’s Day

The establishment of the International Children's Day is related to a notorious massacre in World War Ⅱ. On June, 1942, German fascists shot more than 140 men over the age of 16 and all the infants in the curator's village in The Czech Republic and sent women and 90 children to the concentration camp. After World War Ⅱ, economic depression spreads all over the world, many children died of infectious diseases; some were forced to work and got tortured badly. In order to mourn for all the children died in fascist aggressionespecially the children died in the curator's village, on November, 1949, the Women's International Democratic Federation held directors’ meeting in Moscow. In order to improve children's lives, the meeting confirmed the first day of June to be the International Children's Day.

国际儿童节的设立,和发生在二战期间一次著名的屠杀有关。19426月,德国法西斯枪杀了捷克利迪策村16岁以上的男性公民140余人和全部婴儿,并把妇女和90名儿童押往集中营。第二次世界大战结束后,世界各地经济萧条,儿童有的得了传染病,一批批地死去;有的则被迫当童工,受尽折磨。为了悼念利迪策村和全世界所有在法西斯侵略战争中死难的儿童,194911月,国际民主妇女联合会在莫斯科举行理事会议。为了改善儿童的生活,会议决定以6月的第一天为国际儿童节。
