Now, allow me to introduce some important Russian festivals to you in brief.
Noviy God or New Year
Noviy God (we also call it New Year) in January1th is the most popular Russian festival. In the Noviy God every family are revolved around a new year’s tree (called conifer tree) which is decorated with sweets and special glass decorations and has a bright star on top. She had shared a song accompanying with a lively tone with us dedicated with this New Year tree which is usually sung by Father Frost. Being comparable with the Christmas Day in Europe, there is a Father Frost who is the Russian Santa Claus in the prospect with special costumes. They come to hug kids with the greeting and give the gifts.
Of course, on New Year is complete without a family get together and delicious meals and fireworks. Another tradition is to listen to the New Year speech by the president of Russia on New Year’s Day. Usually the president pronounces his speech on the Red Square in Moscow at 23:55 hours.
Maslenitsa (pancake week)
Pancake week is the only purely Russian holiday that dates back to the pagan times. It is a celebration of the end of winter chills and the start of spring, of warmth, of hope, of growth. The essential element of this festival is the pancake. The key symbol of Maslenitsa is pancakes - round, golden and warm, they represent the sun and the welcoming of spring. The pancakes are served with butter, sour cream, mushrooms or caviar.
Maslenitsa’s end means the winter giving way to the spring. Maslenitsa is usually celebrated in 28th of February and 6th of March.
Easter
The spring feast of Easter is a favourite celebration among most Russians. It is a light and kind feast that brings belief, hope and love. And it means passing with the Christ to other life, deliverance from death. Easter is meant as a sacred week of Resurrection of Christ during which, the Holy gates in churches remain open meaning that now Resurrection of Christ opened heaven for all. Like many countries in Eastern Europe, Russians celebrate Easter with decorated eggs and special foods and customs.
Day of defenders of motherland
Russia Day is an occasion for many Russians to demonstrate national pride. Some people celebrate Russia's economic and social achievements and pay tribute to famous Russians on June 12.
