Title.TotheChiefMusician.EvenshortPsalms,iftheyrecordbutoneinstanceofthegoodnessoftheLord,andrebukebutbrieflytheprideofman,areworthyofourbestminstrelsy.WhenweseethateachPsalmisdedicatedto"thechiefmusician,"itshouldmakeusvalueourpsalmody,andforbidustopraisetheLordcarelessly.Maschil.AnInstructive.EventhemaliceofaDoegmayfurnishinstructiontoaDavid.APsalmofDavid.HewastheprimeobjectofDoeg'sdoggishhatred,andthereforethemostfittingpersontodrawfromtheincidentthelessonconcealedwithinit.WhenDoegtheEdomitecameandtoldSaul,andsaithuntohim,DavidiscometothehouseofAhimelech.Bythisdeceitfultalebearing,heprocuredthedeathofallthepriestsatNob:thoughithadbeenacrimetohavesuccouredDavidasarebel,theywerenotintheirintentandknowledgeguiltyofthefault.Davidfeltmuchthevillanyofthisarchenemy,andherehedenounceshiminvigorousterms;itmaybealsothathehasSaulinhiseye.

Ver.1.Whyboasteththyselfinmischief,Omightyman?Doeghadsmallmatterforboastinginhavingprocuredtheslaughterofabandofdefencelesspriests.Amightymanindeedtokillmenwhonevertouchedasword!Heoughttohavebeenashamedofhiscowardice.Hehadnoroomforexultation!Honourabletitlesarebutironywherethewearerismeanandcruel.IfDavidalludedtoSaul,hemeantbythesewordspityingly

tosay,"Howcanonebynaturefittedfornoblerdeeds,descendtosolowalevelastofindathemeforboastinginaslaughtersoheartlessandmischievous?"ThegoodnessofGodendurethcontinually.Abeautifulcontrast.Thetyrant'sfurycannotdryuptheperennialstreamofdivinemercy.IfpriestsbeslaintheirMasterlives.IfDoegforawhiletriumphstheLordwilloutlivehim,andrightthewrongswhichhehasdone.Thisoughttomodifytheproudexultationsofthewicked,forafterall,whiletheLordliveth,iniquityhaslittlecausetoexaltitself.EXPLANATORYNOTESANDQUAINTSAYINGS
Title.ThatMaschilmeansasacredcomposition,isevidentfromPs47:7,wherethepassagewhichwerender,"Singyepraiseswithunderstanding,"isliterally,"SingyeaMaschil,"orsongofinstruction.Thiswordoccursasatitleinthirteenplaces;andsixtimesisprefixedtocompositionsofDavid's.InseveralinstancesitoccursinconsecutivePsalms;i.e.,inthe42nd(ofwhichthe43rdisthesequel,the44thand45th,the52nd,53rd,54th,and55th,the88thand89th.AcircumstancewhichfavoursthenotionthatthetermwasonepeculiarlyusedbysomeparticulareditororcollectorofacertainportionofthePsalter.JohnJebb.

Ver.2.Thytonguedevisethmischiefs.Thouspeakestwithanulteriordesign.TheinformationgivenwasforSaul'sassistanceapparently,butinverydeedinhishearttheEdomitehatedthepriestsoftheGodofJacob.Itisamarkofdeepdepravity,whentheevilspokeniscraftilyintendedtopromoteayetgreaterevil.Likeasharprazor,workingdeceitfully.Davidrepresentsthefalsetongueasbeingeffectualformischief,likearazorwhich,unawarestothepersonoperatedon,ismakinghimbald;sosoftlyanddeftlydoOrientalbarbersperformtheirwork.Orhemaymeanthataswitharazoraman'sthroatmaybecutveryspeedily,underthepretenceofshavinghim,eventhuskeenly,basely,buteffectuallyDoegdestroyedthebandofthepriests.Whettedbymalice,andguidedbycraft,hedidhiscruelworkwithaccursedthoroughness.EXPLANATORYNOTESANDQUAINTSAYINGS

EXPOSITION
Ver.4.Thoulovest.Thouhastataste,agustoforevillanguage.Alldevouringwords.Therearewordsthat,likeboaconstrictors,swallowmenwhole,orlikelions,rendmentopieces;thesewordsevilmindsarefondof.Theiroratoryisevermorefuriousandbloody.Thatwhichwillmostreadilyprovokethelowestpassionstheyaresuretoemploy,andtheythinksuchpanderingtothemadnessofthewickedtobeeloquenceofahighorder.Othoudeceitfultongue.Mencanmanagetosayagreatmanyfuriousthings,andyetcoveralloverwiththepretextofjustice.Theyclaimthattheyarejealousfortheright,butthetruthistheyaredeterminedtoputdowntruthandholiness,andcraftilygoaboutitunderthistransparentpretence.EXPLANATORYNOTESANDQUAINTSAYINGS

Ver.5.Godshalllikewisedestroytheeforever.Fainwouldthe
persecutordestroythechurch,andthereforeGodshalldestroyhim,pulldownhishouse,pluckuphisroots,andmakeanendofhim.Heshalltaketheeaway.Godshallextinguishhiscoalandsweephimawayliketheashesofthehearth;hewouldhavequenchedthetruth,andGodshallquenchhim.Andplucktheeoutofthydwellingplace,likeaplanttornfromtheplacewhereitgrew,oracaptivedraggedfromhishome.Ahimelechandhisbrotherpriestswerecutofffromtheirabode,andsoshouldthosebewhocompassedandcontrivedtheirmurder.Androottheeoutofthelandoftheliving.Thepersecutorshallbeeradicated,stubbedupbytheroot,cutuprootandbranch.Hesoughtthedeathofothersanddeathshallfalluponhim.Hetroubledthelandoftheliving,andheshallbebanishedtothatlandwherethewickedceasefromtroubling.Thosewhowillnot"letlive"havenorightto"live."Godwillturnthetablesonmaliciousmen,andmetetothemaportionwiththeirownmeasure.

Ver.5.Godshalldestroytheeforever,etc.Therearefourwordsthepsalmistmakesusoftodenotetheuttervengeancethatawaitedthisdeceitfulandbloodywretch,allofthemhavingaverystrongmeaning.Thefirst,kstyfromstn,signifiestopulldown,andbreakutterlyintopieces;aswhenanaltarisdemolished.(Jud6:308:9.Thesecond,kthfromtheroothrh,whichsignifiestotwistanything,orpluckitupbytwistingitround,astreesaresometimestwistedup.Thethird,khmyfromhmg,whichproperlysignifiesutterlytosweepawayanythinglikedustorchaff;andtheexpressionlhmkhmmeansnotsweeptheeawayfromthytent,butsweeptheeaway,thatthoumayestbenolongeratent;thyself,thyfamily,thyfortune,shallbewhollyandentirelysweptaway,anddissipatedforever;towhichthefourthword,ksrs,answers,

Ver.7.Lo.Lookyehere,andreadtheepitaphofamightyman,wholordeditproudlyduringhislittlehour,andsethisheeluponthenecksoftheLord'schosen.ThisisthemanthatmadenotGodhisstrength.Beholdtheman!Thegreatvaingloriousman.Hefoundafortress,butnotinGod;hegloriedinhismight,butnotintheAlmighty.Whereishenow?Howhasitfaredwithhiminthehourofhisneed?Beholdhisruin,andbeinstructed.Buttrustedintheabundanceofhisriches,andstrengthenedhimselfinhiswickedness.Thesubstancehehadgathered,andthemischiefshehadwrought,werehisboastandglory.Wealthandwickednessaredreadfulcompanions;whencombinedtheymakeamonster.Whenthedevilismasterofmoneybags,heisadevilindeed.BeelzebubandMammontogetherheatthefurnaceseventimeshotterforthechildofGod,butintheendthatshallworkouttheirowndestruction.Whereverweseetodayamangreatinsinandsubstance,weshalldowelltoanticipatehisend,andviewthisverseasthedivineinmemoriam.EXPLANATORYNOTESANDQUAINTSAYINGS
Ver.7.Lo,thisisthemanthatmadenotGodhisstrength.Davidhavingshowed(Ps52:5-6thewickedman,bytherighteousjudgmentofGodrootedoutofthelandoftheliving,showsusinthenextverse,therighteousmanatoncefearingandlaughingatthissight,asalsopointingathimsaying,Lo,thisisthemanthatmadenotGodhisstrength.Thewordsareadivinebutcuttingsarcasm.Theoriginalisgeber,whichsignifiethastrong,valiantman:aswesayinEnglish,Lo,thisisthebraveandgallantmanyouwotof!Butwhowasthisforaman?Hewasone,saithhe,thattrustedintheabundanceofhisriches.Oh!Itishardtoaboundinrichesandnottotrustinthem.Hencethatcaution(Ps62:10:Ifrichesincrease,setnotyourheartuponthem.Now,whatisthesettingtheheartuponrichesbutourrejoicingandtrustinginthem?Andbecause

theheartofmanissoeasilypersuadedintothissinfultrustuponriches,thereforetheapostleisurgentwithTimothytopersuadeallrichmen--notonlymereworldlyrichmen,butgodlyrichmen--againstit;yea,heurgesTimothytopersuaderichmenagainsttwosins,whichareworsethanallthepovertyintheworld,yettheusualattendantsofriches--prideandconfidence:Chargethemthatarerichinthisworld,thattheybenothighminded.1Ti6:17.JosephCaryl.
Ver.7-8.Perhapssomeofyouhavebeenlongprofessors,andyetcometolittlegrowthinlovetoGod,humility,heavenlymindedness,
mortification;anditisworththediggingtoseewhatliesattherootofyourprofession,whethertherebenotalegalprinciplethathathtoomuchinfluencedyou.HaveyounotthoughttocarryallwithGodfromyourdutiesandservices,andtoomuchlaidupyourhopesinyourownactings?Alas!thisisassomuchdeadearth,whichmustbethrownout,andgospelprincipleslaidintheroomthereof.Trybutthiscourse,andtrywhetherthespringofthygracewillnotcomeonapace.Davidgivesanaccounthowhecametostandandflourishwhensomethatwererichandmighty,onasuddenwitheredandcametonothing.Lo,saithhe,thisisthemanthatmadenotGodhisstrength;buttrustedintheabundanceofhisriches.ButIamlikeagreenolivetreeinthehouseofGod:ItrustinthemercyofGodforeverandever.Whileotherstrustintherichesoftheirownrighteousnessandservices,andmakenotChristtheirstrength,dothourenounceall,andtrustinthemercyofGodinChrist,andthoushaltbelikeagreenolivewhentheyfadeandwither.WilliamGurnall.HINTSTOTHEVILLAGEPREACHER

Ver.8.ButI,huntedandpersecutedthoughIam,amlikeagreenolivetree.Iamnotpluckedupordestroyed,butamlikeaflourishingolive,whichoutoftherockdrawsoil,andamidthedroughtstilllivesandgrows.InthehouseofGod.Hewasoneofthedivinefamily,andcouldnotbeexpelledfromit;hisplacewasnearhisGod,andtherewashesafeandhappy,despiteallthemachinationsofhisfoes.Hewasbearingfruit,andwouldcontinuetodosowhenallhisproudenemieswerewitheredlikebranchesloppedfromthetree.ItrustinthemercyofGodforever

ThisappearstoexpressoftheHebrewwords,whichourtranslatorsrender,likeagreenolivetree,butwhichinrealityhavenoreferencetothecolour,buttotheflourishing,vigorous,andthrivingstateoftheplant;justasHomergivesittheepithetof"luxuriant,"and"flourishing;"andOvidthatof"everflourishing."Thefactis,thecolouroftheleavesofthistreeisnotabrightlivelygreen;butadark,disagreeable,oryellowishone.Scheuchzerdescribestheleaves,as"supernecolorisatrovirentis,velinviridiflavescentis."AnEnglishtraveller,writingfromItaly,thusexpresseshisdisappointmentabouttheolivetree:--"Thefields,andindeedthewholefaceofTuscany,areinamannercoveredwitholivetrees;buttheolivetreedoesnotanswerthecharacterIhaveconceivedofit.Theroyalpsalmistandsomeofthesacredwriters,speakwithraptureofthe`greenolivetree,'sothatIexpectedabeautifulgreen;andIconfesstoyou,Iwaswretchedlydisappointedtofinditshueresemblingthatofourhedgeswhentheyarecoveredwithdust."Ihaveheardothertravellersexpressthesamefeelingofdisappointment."Thetruewayofsolvingthedifficulty,"asHarmerproperlyremarks,"istoconsiderthewordtranslated`green,'notasdescriptiveofcolour,butofsomeotherproperty;youthfulness,vigour,prosperity,orthelike."RichardMant.

fancifullyimaginethatolivetreesgrowincertainofthecourtsoftheTabernacle;butthenotionmustnotbeendured,itwouldhavebeentoonearanapproachtothegrovesoftheheathentohavebeentolerated,atleastinDavid'stime.Thetextshouldsurelybereadwithsomediscretion;thepoetdoesnotrefertoolivetreesinGod'shouse,butcompareshimselfinthehouseofGodtoanolivetree.Thisremindsusofthepassage,"Thychildrenlikeoliveplantsaroundthytable,"wheresomewhoseimaginationshavebeenmorelivelythantheirjudgments,haveseenatablesurrounded,notwithchildren,butwitholiveplants.Whoever,
