英语作文中“使”的多种表达方法

多数学生用英语表达“使…如何”时,多用make一词,结果用词单调,句式缺少变化。其实英语中还有许多可以表示“使”、“令”、“让”等意义的词语和结构,在此仅介绍一些常用者,以供同学们在写作中灵活运用。
1.deprive“使丧失,使不能享受”,用法为 deprive sb. of sth
Her trouble deprived her of sleep.

烦恼使她御夜难眠。

2. set“使处于特定状态”,用法为 set sb. doing(或介词短语)

Teacher’s remarks have set me thinking.

老师的话使我深思。
His behavior set people talking.

他的行为使人们议论纷纷。
My jokes set the whole table( the company) laughing.

我的笑话使全桌的(全体同伴)大笑起米。回

3.cost“使处于某种状态,听任”,用法为 cost sb.sth.

4.leave“使处于某种状态,听任”,用法为 leave+宾语+形容词(介词短语、不定式或分词)

5.send“使进入特定状态”,用法为sent+宾语+分词(形容词、介词短语)
Inflation has sent prices soaring.

6. cause“促使”,用法为cause sb.sth.,cause sb.to do sth.cause sb.sth.

8. provoke“激起,引起,促使”,用法为直接接宾语

9.keep“使保持某状态”,“阻止”,用法为 keep sth.from doing.
Gravitation keeps all objects from flying away from the earth.

12. enable“使有能力”,用法为 enable sb.to do

13. disable“使无能力做”……,用法为 disable sb.from doing或 for sth
His illness totally disabled him from following his vocation

这两种结构表示“令人喜哀、乐、惊、恐等”,名词前常有表程度的形容词修饰,常用的名词有amazement,surprise, astonishment,sorrow, relief, joy, content,delight,

satisfaction, disappointment, annoyance, shame,horror等
He broke it, greatly to my annoyance.
