My inspiring Chinese cultural heroine - Li Qingzhao
What is the first thing that comes to your mind, when you hear the word “hero”? The greatest emperors such as Han Wu, Kang, Qian and Genghis Khan? The greatest leader such as Sun Yat-sen and Mao Zedong? Patriots like Zheng Chenggong? Or even Yang Liwei, Jackie Chan and Yao Ming? Must heroes always be male? Definitely not. From my point of view, Li Qingzhao is a very inspiring Chinese cultural heroine, especially for women. With unbelievable courage and perseverance, she dared to face her own heart and do what women in feudal age dare not do.
Li Qingzhao was a famous poet in the Song Dynasty. After the death of her husband, she had to take the responsibility for their precious collection of documents, which she and her husband had collected and viewed together in the good old days. Several years later, she was married to Zhang Ruzhou who coveted her money and her collection. No sooner had she seen his ugly soul than she decided to divorce him.
It was almost an impossible mission that a woman fought against her husband and the whole male-dominated society at that time. According to the law, she had to be confined in prison for some time. Despite the suffering, she kept writing poetry until her death. Though she received much criticism, she dared to live an independent life in a patriarchal society.
Her story shows us how far we could go with great determination. That is why she is my inspiring heroine, not only for her talent but also for her spirits of bravery and persistence, which play an important role in Chinese culture. Nowadays life is different from what it used to be, but unfairness and criticism always exist, no matter who you are. If we get stuck in unfair situations, we should have no fear and fight for our life, just as Li Qingzhao once did hundreds of years ago!
