What Is a Good Friend?

Human-beings are social creatures. Not only do we need basic materials for surviving, but also we seek acceptance, respect and love from other social members to gratify our spiritual needs. Generally we have lovers, friends and families who provide us what we need for our affective life, among whom friends are irreplaceable.

When we are lonely we need friends’ companion ; when we bubble with joys we need friends to share our happiness; when we are confronted with difficulties we need friends to give us encouragement and suggestions; when we encounter great pains we need friends to comfort our broken hearts. A friend is a shelter when it rains, a fire when it’s cold outside, and a bay that exists there to settle experienced hearts.

Though friends are important and we have many friends, it is hard to give a clear definition to “ a good friend ”.Some people say that a good friend is the one who stays beside you when you are all alone; some say a good friend is the one who knows you well and cares about you.

In my own opinion a good friend must be honest and faithful. Being honest means that good friends don’t lie to each other for their own benefits. When we disagree, we debate; when we misunderstand, we talk. We don’t hide away our true feelings in front of good friends. Being faithful means that we trust each other. In front of a good friend we are what we are, not wearing any masks. We know we are safe, and actually we are. Moreover, mutual understanding is essential on maintaining good friendship. Understanding doesn’t mean that good friends have to know everything about us. It is enough that they know how we are feeling , that there are some reasons for such feelings and that they stand beside us and share our feeling whole-heartedly.

I have a lot of good friends. From primary school to university, I met different friends who go through a certain span of time with me in different stage of my life. I treasure those times when we were together since they make up the memory of my life. I don't think so much of what is a good friend and I don't see any necessity to do so. The more we expect from and require a friend, the less likely we can have true friends and enjoy what friends bring.

A good friend is a good friend when we know he or she is, nothing else.

在我看来，好朋友必须诚实和忠诚。诚实意味着好朋友不会为了自己的利益而互相撒谎。当我们不同意时，我们辩论;当我们误解时，我们说话。我们不会把真情隐藏在好朋友的泡沫中。忠诚意味着我们彼此信任。在好朋友面前，我们就是我们，不戴任何面具。我们知道我们是安全的，实际上我们是安全的。此外，相互理解对保持良好的友谊至关重要。理解并不意味着好朋友必须了解我们的一切。他们了解我们的感受，有一些原因，他们站在我们身边，全心全意地分享我们的感受，这就足够了。
