A French Traveler

A Frenchman was once traveling in England . He could speak English quite

well but not perfectly. For one thing, his vocabulary was not large.

One day, he was having a meal in a small country hotel and wanted to order

some eggs. But he couldn't remember the word for eggs.

Suddenly, through the window, he saw a rooster walking in the yard. He

immediately asked the waiter what the bird was called in English.

The waiter told him that it was called a rooster.

The Frenchman then asked what the rooster's wife was called.

The waiter told him that she was called a hen.

The Frenchman then asked what the hen's children were called.

The waiter told him that they were chickens.

The Frenchman then asked what the chickens were called before they were

born.

The waiter told him they were called eggs.

"Fine!" said the Frenchman. "Please bring me two eggs and a cup of coffee.

l.perfectly 熟练地

"Just look!"said he to himself. "That dog down there has

some meat, too. If I could get it away from him, I would really eat well tonight!"

With this thought, he made a snap at the other dog's

meat. And as he did, his own meat fell into the water. So then he had nothing at

all.

Then he saw that the other dog had lost his meat, too.

"That is as it should be!?thought he. "For I saw him trying to take my meat away

from me."

Zeus decided to send her down to men as a present. So Hermes them essenger brought

her to Epimetheus, brother of Prometheus. The greatness of her beauty touched the

hearts of all who looked upon her,and Epimetheus happily received her into his

house. He had quite forgotten Pometheus' warning:never to accept anything from

Zeus.

When he was busy with teaching men the art of living,Prometheus had left a bigcask

in the care of Epimetheus. He had warned his brother not to open the lid.Pandora

was a curious woman. She had been feeling very disappointed that her husband did

not allow her to take a look at the contents of the cask. One day, when Epimetheus

was out,she lifted the lid and out it came unrest and war,Plague and

sickness, theft and violence, grief, sorrow, and all the other evils. The human world

was hence to experience these evils.Only hope stayed within the mouth of the jar

and never flew out.So men always have hope within their hearts.

The wolf and the fox wanted to eat the rabbit, but it wasn't easy to

catch him.

One day the wolf said to the fox, "You go home and lie in bed. I'll

that the fox is dead." Then the wolf went away.

The rabbit went to the fox's house. He looked in through the window and

saw the fox lying in bed with his eyes closed. He thought, "Is the fox really dead

or is he pretending to be dead? If he's not dead, he'll catch me when I go near

him." so he said, "The wolf says that the fox is dead. But he doesn't look like a

dead fox. The mouth of a dead fox is always open." When the fox heard this, he

thought, "I'll show him that I'm dead." So he opened his mouth.

Long long ago, there was a shepherd boy who grazed sheep on a hill everyday.

One day the boy felt a little lonely and wanted to make fun of the farmers

laboring at the foot of the hill. So he climbed up a big stone, and shouted:

"wolves have come! wolves have come!" In a minute, the farmers came only to find

there were no wolves at all. Seeing the farmers were taken in, the boy laughed and

said, I am just joking, Don't take it seriously. Then the farmers shook their

head and left.A few days later, the farmers heard the boy shout again. So they ran

up the hill and found that they were cheated again. Another day, several wolves

really came. The boy was frightened and cried out: help! Wolves have come!

Once upon a time, there were four mice that lived in a wall in the

field.

Summer was coming, and so the mice came out of the wall to collect

berries, nuts, corn and straw. Everyone was working very hard, day and night.

Everyone was working very hard, except, Frederick.

Why arent you working, Frederick? his friends asked him. oh,

but I am. Frederick told them. Im collecting the sunshine for the cold, dark

winter.

A few days later his friends asked him again why arent you working,

Frederick? Oh, but I am. Frederick told them. Im collecting colors for

the long, grey winter.

A few days later his friends asked him again why arent you working,

Frederick? Oh, but I am. Frederick told them. Im collecting words for

the long, quiet winter.

Soon, the first snow came, and the four mice went back into the wall.

They ate their berries and they ate their nuts and they ate their corn and they

ate their straw. But time passed, and time passed, and soon there were no more

berries, and soon there were no more nuts and soon there were no more corn and

soon there were no more straw.

Now the winter was cold and dark, long and quiet. The mice were sad and

hungry. Then they remembered Frederick.

Hey, Frederick, can you show us what you collected for the

winter.

Ok, said Frederick, close your eyes. Here is my sunshine for the

cold, dark winter. And Frederick began to tell his friends some stories, and the

mice to feel warmer and warmer.

Great, Frederick! How about the colors and the words?

Ok, said Frederick, close your eyes and he told them about the

Primitive peoples believe that hair nail clippings and lost teeth remain

magically linked to the owner even after they have been disconnected from his

body. As any voodoo artist will tell you if you want to grind someone into

powder you don't need to touch him at all. It's quite enough to stamp on a

missing molar and let "contagious magic" do the rest. This is why peoples all over

the world traditionally hide lost body parts lest they fall into the wrong

hands.

American children's ritual of hiding lost teeth under their pillows probably

derives distantly from this practice. But there is an obvious difference for

when Suzie conceals her baby milk-tooth she fully expects it to be found and

by a good magician not an evil one. Moreover she expects to be paid for having

surrendered it and at the going rate. Nothing mare clearly suggests the blithe

commercial gusto of our culture than this transformation of a fearful superstition

into a cheery business transaction.

Because American children expect fair exchange for their lost teeth it is likely

that the tooth fairy ritual derives more immediately from the European and

particularly German tradition of placing a lost tooth in a mouse or a rat hole.

The folk belief governing this practice is that when a new tooth grows in it

will possess the dental qualities not of the original lost tooth but of

whatever creature finds it so the creatures of choice would be those world-class

champers the rodents.

Thus the optimistic "fair exchange" principle most likely started in Germany and

was brought here by German immigrants. It was only left to America to replace the

beneficent tooth rat with the more agreeable fairy and to replace the

traditional hope of hard molars with our more characteristic hope of hard cash.

How a Colt Crossed the River

One day, a colt took a bag of wheat to the mill. As he was running with

the bag on his back, he came to a small river. The colt could not decide whether

he could cross it. Looking around, he saw a cow grazing nearby. He asked, Aunt

Cow, could you tell me if I can cross the river? The cow told him that he could

and that the river was not very deep, just knee high.

The colt was crossing the river when a squirrel jumped down fron a tree

and stopped him. The squirrel shouted, Colt, stop! Youll drown! One of my

friends drowned just yesterday in the river. Not knowing what to do, the colt

went home to consult his mum.

He told his mum his experience on the way. His mother said, My child,

dont always listen to others. Youd better go and try yourself. Then youll

know what to do.

Later, at the river, the squirrel stopped the colt again. Little

horse, its too dangerous! No, I want to try myself, answered the colt.

Then he crossed the river carefully.

Real knowledge comes from practice.

The Frog in the Shallow Well

Have you not heard of the frog that lived in a shallow well?

It said to a turtle that lived in the East Sea, "I am so happy! When I go

out, I jump about on the railing beside the mouth of the well. When I come home, I

rest in the holes on the broken wall of the well. If I jump into the water, it

comes up to my armpits and holds up my cheeks. If I walk in the mud, it covers up

my feet. I look around at the wriggly worms, crabs and tadpoles, and none of them

can compare with me. Moreover, I am lord of this trough of water and I stand up

tall in this shallow well. My happiness is full. My dear sir, why don't you come

often and look around my place?"

Before the turtle from the East Sea could get its left foot in the

well, its right knee got stuck. It hesitated and retreated. The turtle told the

frog about the East Sea. "Even a distance of a thousand li cannot give you an idea

of the sea's width; even a height of a thousand ren cannot give you an idea of its

depth. In the time of King Yu of the Xia dynasty, there were floods nine years out

of ten, but the waters in the sea did not increase. ln the time of King Tang of

the Shang dynasty there were droughts seven years out of eight, but the waters in

the sea did not decrease. The sea does not change along with the passage of time

and its level does not rise or fall according to the amount of rain that falls.

The greatest happiness is to live in the East Sea."

After listening to these words, the frog of the shallow well was

shocked into realization of his own insignificance and became very ill at ease.
