People used to say: “ Behind every successful man there‟s a woman.”
Some women still like making their husbands and sons successful. But some women want
more for themselves. They want good jobs. When they work. They want to be paid equally as men.
Today the best jobs are sill given to men. Even when women do the same work, they are often
paid less than men. Women went these things changer. The women‟s liberation movement was started by women who didn‟t want to stand behind successful men. They wanted to stand beside
men, with the same chance for success. The movement is quite new, and many American women
do not agree with its purpose. But it has already made several changes in women‟s lives, and men‟s lives, too.

What happened to me that day is just unbelievable. The first thing to go wrong was that all
the parking spaces were taken, so I had to park on the grass and hoped that I would not get a
parking ticket. When I go to the Admissions Office, there was already a long line of students
waiting. By the time it was my turn, two of the courses I needed were filled, and I had to go back
to my advisor and make out a whole new timetable. Although I did sign up for all my courses, I
missed lunch. The next thing to go wrong was that the bookstore had sold out of one of the
textbooks required. As I was leaving I wondered what else could possibly happen, then I saw a
policeman standing beside my car and writing out a ticket.

In most parts of the United States, Friday night is the big supermarket night, probably
because Friday is payday in many factories and businesses. Most housewives also do their
weekend shopping on either Friday or Saturday, although supermarkets in many places are now
open on Sunday as well.
In almost all supermarkets there are shopping carts with a special space to set the baby. In the
early days, before there were carts, it was noticed that as soon as a woman shopper had her arms
full of goods, she stopped buying. Thus carts were introduced. Later a space for the baby was
40
provided in the cart. With the baby sitting comfortably in the cart, the mother felt less need to
hurry through the store and she would probably buy more. It is said that the average American
housewife goes to the supermarket twice a week. On the average she will spend from one hour to

W: There are many interesting stories about how a baby learns to say its first word. Now,
Mark, would you like to share your story with us?
M: OK, here is my story. I was about 18 months old, I think. And I had just started saying my
first word. Every time a truck went by, I shouted a word that sounded like “truck”, But to
everyone else it sounded nothing like it. My parents tried to correct me, but failed. Then about 3
months later, we traveled to New York.
As we were waiting for our plane in the airport, I looked out of a huge window, At that very
moment, I saw the largest truck in the world. I had to tell someone about this. I turned my father,
who was standing to next about a thousand people waiting for flight and screamed “Truck!
Truck!” My father tried hard to shut me up, but I was so excited and I kept screaming my special
word. My poor mother decided that she didn‟t know this baby and ran to the lady‟s room where
she hid until I finally stopped. Well, I was talking like a normal child. However, my parents will
never forget the very first word I produced in my life.

W: Tom, does your throat hurt?
M: Yes.
W: Ok. Do you want to get better?
M: Yes.
W: Ok. We want you to get better, too. You‟ll have your tonsils out tomorrow, and you won‟t
get so many colds any more.
M: But if I have my tonsils out tomorrow, I‟ll miss my birthday party in Saturday.
W: I know. It‟s a problem, isn‟t it? Let me try to work something out.
41
M: What?
W: I have to think about it.
M: You‟re joking with me.
W: Oh, I‟m not, Tom. Give a chance to think about it , and I‟ll get a new idea.
M: A surprise?
W: Maybe. But you just put on your clothes, and I‟ll think of a surprise.
M: Will it hurt?
W: No. There are other boys and girls, and they are having tonsils out.
M: I don‟t want to.
W: Change your clothes, Tom. Everything will just be fine.

Many people like to decorate their houses at Christmas time. They decorate the inside of the
house and the outside, too. Inside they usually decorate a Christmas tree and the fire-place, if there
is one. Outside they place wreaths, ribbons, and colored lights on the door and windows. If there is
a tree in front of their house, they place colored lights on it, too.
In New York, there is a very tall, beautifully decorated Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center
at Christmas time. In Washington, there is also a big decorated tree in front of the White House.
People come from many cities to admire the trees and the gaily decorated shop windows on the
principal avenues of large cities.

M: Yes, many American people do think so, and they feel proud of Lincoln. He rose from the

M: Yes. It was on April 14, 1865. After a very busy day. Lincoln and his wife went to see a
play at a theatre in Washington, a 25-year-old man, who was from the South, suddenly shot
Lincoln through the head. W: Did he die immediately when he was shot?

M: Hello, Mrs Smith. I‟m from the Daily Mirror. And I‟m doing a report on public opinion
about the city bus service. So, what do you think of the bus service? W: The bus service? Actually I don‟t use it that often unless I have to go shopping. M:
What‟s… how could the bus service be improved?
W: Well, they could turn up on time. I mean you look at the timetable and you think, oh, well,
five minutes to wait, and it turns out to be an hour. M: Do any other people in your family use the
bus service?
W: My husband. He uses it more often. But fortunately a girl who works in his office often
gives him a lift to work. But when he does need to use it, he‟s often angry at it. Once, he waited up to fifteen minutes at the station for a bus. So I think there should be some way of warning people
when a bus is not going to arrive and certainly much more frequent bus services.

Rob went to Penquay for the weekend. He arrived there late on Friday evening. The landlady
of the guest house, Mrs Doone, answered the door and showed him to his room. Rob was very
tired and went straight to bed. He slept well and didn„t wake up until nine o‟clock the next morning. Rob went downstairs for breakfast. Because there were no other guests, Mrs Doone
invited him to have breakfast with her and her daughter, Catherine. Catherine was already sitting
in the dining-room. She was about thirteen with long black hair and clear grey eyes. Mrs Doone
went to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. Rob noticed that there were four places at the table and
he asked Catherine if there was another guest. Catherine told him that it was an empty place. And
it used to be her father„s place. Her father had been a fisherman. Three years before he had gone
out in his boat, and he had never returned. Her mother always kept that place for him and she
made his breakfast every morning. Catherine showed him his photo on the wall. Rob said nothing,
but he looked very worried. At that moment Mrs Doone returned. She poured four cups of tea, and
put one in the empty place. Rob looked more worried and he stared at the empty chair. Suddenly,
he heard footsteps outside the door and a tall man with a black beard walked into the room. Rob
looked terrified. It was the man in the photo. He jumped up and ran out of the room. The man
asked, “What‟s the matter?” Catherine said, “I don„t know. He‟s a guest from London. He„s here because a tall man with a black beard trying to kill him.” “Catherine,” the man said, “Have you
been telling stories again?” “Stories, father? Me?” the girl laughed.

That would be a waste of money. What is your opinion?
W: In my opinion, I don‟t think it‟s necessary to buy a very big one.
M: Any reason?
49
W: Yes. As I know, your sitting room isn‟t big enough. If you put in a very big television, that will be bad for your eyes, and a smaller size TV can also pick up good programs.

In the 13th century, the famous Italian traveler,Marco Polo, traveled a long way to China.
During his stay in China, he saw many wonderful things. One of the things he discovered was that
the Chinese used paper money. In western countries, people did not use paper money until the
15th century. However, people in China began to use paper money in the 7th century. A Chinese
man called Cai Lun invented paper almost 2,000 years ago. He made it from wood. He took the
wood from trees and make it into paper. He then put these pieces of paper together and made them
into a book. Now paper still comes from trees. We use a lot of paper every day. If we keep on
wasting so much paper, there will not be any trees left on the earth. If there are no trees, there will
be no paper. It is reported that people throw away about 2,800 tons of paper only in Shanghai
every day. It takes 17 trees to make one ton of paper. This means that they are cutting nearly
48,000 trees every day. Since it takes more than ten years for a tree to grow, we must start using
57
less paper now. If we don‟t, we will not have enough time to grow more trees to take the place of
those we use for paper.

Once upon a time the animals of the forest came together to see who was the most beautiful.
All the animals were very happy and excited. However, the snake was very sad because she knew
she was ugly. The rooster was very kind to her. He lent the snake his crown. She put it on her head
and felt very happy. The snake glided along proudly, like a queen. She wanted to show off her
beautiful crown. The animals said she was the most beautiful, the snake did not see the large pool
of water in front of her. She fell into the pool and dropped the crown. She searched for the crown
but could not find it. She was afraid and did not want to tell the rooster. The next morning, the
rooster got up very early and waited for the snake. She did not appear. The rooster called for her
time and again. Still the snake did not come. To this day, the rooster still gets up early each
morning and crows. He is saying, “Where are you?”

Halloween is celebrated every year. But just how and when did this custom happen? Is it just
a harmless celebration? The word “Halloween” actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It
comes from a change of All Hallows Eve. All Hallows Day, or All Saint‟s Day, November 1, is a Catholic day. But in the 5th century BC, summer officially ended on October 31. It was believed
that, on that day, the spirits of all those who had died throughout the year would come back in
search of living bodies for the next year. It was believed to be their only hope for the after life.
64
Naturally, the living did not want to be taken away. So on the night of October 31, villagers would
put out the fires in their homes, to make them cold and unwanted. They would then dress up in all
manners of strange customs and noisily walked around the neighborhood, being as wild as
possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for living bodies. Some accounts tell of how they
would burn someone as sort of a lesson to the spirits.

suggest we go shopping together and look for a nice tank.
W: That might be quite expensive.
M: Check the prices before you buy one. And you ought to put a few large rocks in the tank.
Fish love swimming around the rocks and through holes in them.

Also they make the tank look much prettier.
