一天，一只老鹤站在荷花池里的浅水处，它那张长长的脸上一副沮丧的射神情。附近的一只蟹注意到老鹤的一脸忧愁，问道：
Therearefishinthispond.Howisitthatyoustandthereasifyouhavegivenupthethoughtofevereating?
这个池塘里有鱼。你怎么呆呆地在那儿，好像再也不想吃鱼了。
Iamsad,saidtheoldCrane,becauseIheardaterriblepieceofnewstoday.我很伤心，老鹤说，今天我听到了一个可怕的消息。

于是，他们同意由鹤把它们逐一送到安全的池塘。
ThewickedCranetookthefish,onebyone,toalonelyspotnearby,wherehedevouredthem.Hereturnedformore,reportingthatalltheotherswerenowsafeandhappyinanotherpool.

这只阴险邪恶的鹤把鱼一条一条地衔到附近一个偏僻的地方，把它们吃掉了。然后又回来衔更多的鱼，还说那些鱼在另一个池塘里很安全快乐。
Finallyallthefishweregone,andtheCrabsaid;SirCrane,takemealsotothatpool,forIwishtobewithmyfriendsthefish.
最后，鱼都给衔走了，蟹说：鹤先生，也把我带到那个池塘里去吧，我想和我的鱼朋友们在一起。
ThegreedyCrane,wholovedCrabmeat,carefullyliftedtheten-leggedcreatureandcarriedhimofftothespotwherehehaddevouredallthefish.
