Nowadays many young people dont want to go to college as its costly to receive education at college. So, is a college education worth the price? This is a question more Americans are asking as college costs continue rising while the job market remains weak.

Attending a four-year college in the United States can cost more than $40,000 a year. That information comes from the College Board, a private company. Many people with a college education are drowning in student debt. They have to borrow money to finance their education. Reading this, some people may think its really not worth it to spend so much money on college education. But is it really so?

A recent study suggests that a college education is worth it, at least in the United States. That information comes from the Hamilton Project at the Brookings Institution. The study found that someone with a four-year college education earns two times as much as a high school graduate over a lifetime. And for nearly all study programs, an individual with a four-year bachelors degree earns even more than someone with a two-year degree.

However, graduates of some college majors may find their situation disappointing. For example, a chemical engineer can expect to earn double the earnings of a social worker over a lifetime. On average, a finance graduate makes more than a nurse or medical aide, while a nurse makes more than an elementary school teacher. Generally, college majors that require skill in mathematics promise high lifetime earnings. Graduates in computer science, engineering, and physics have the highest wages. Majors that involve teaching children or counseling have the lowest pay. Actually, graduates with bachelors degrees in some fields earn even less than people with a two-year associates degree over a time. They include early childhood education, elementary education and social work.

Now what do you think of going to college? Perhaps youve concluded that generally people who go to college earn more than people who dont receive a college education. And you can earn very good salaries if you choose a good major. Therefore, we can say that a college education is worth the price.

Actually, from my point of view, I think people should go to college. Earnings shouldnt be the only factor to be considered. Receiving a college education has many other benefits. Considering all the benefits, we can see its worth it to go to college.

24. What is the topic of the text?

A. Should a college education be costly?

B. Is a college education worth the price?

C. Can people find good jobs after graduation?

D. Is a four-year degree better than a two- year degree?

25. Paragraph 2 shows that a college education is ____________.

A. tiring B. worthy C. important D. costly

26. On average, which of the following people earns the most?

A. A nurse. B. A social worker.

C. A finance graduate. D. An elementary school teacher.

27. We can conclude from Paragraph 4 that _______________.

A. some college majors shouldnt exist

B. not all college graduates can find work

C. some college graduates cant support themselves

D. not all college majors have a guarantee of good wages

C

Whether they are hunters or the hunted, these clever animals are all masters of disguise (伪装) who can fool even the most beady-eyed passers-by into believing they are not there. Some hide under lily pads, some hide into the bark of a tree while others slip into the snow, either to hide from a hungry predator (捕食性动物) or move silently towards an unwitting prey.

These animals, as some of the earths best masters of disguise, can hide from their predators. However, they cant escape the sharp eyes of American photographer Art Wolfe, who has spent over 35 years working in the deserts of Africa, the rainforests of South America, the mountains of the United States and snow plains of Canada to capture wildlife.

The Seattle, WA photographer says that finding and filming these clever animals is a difficult process, one that often takes many hours. However, for him, it is definitely worth the time because of the thrill of capturing a creature that has managed to blend into its natural habitat so skillfully like none other.

His search has taken him to almost every continent in the world --- from the deserts of Africa to the rainforests of South America and even, the snow plains of Canada. Over the years he has snapped so many amazing photos that he has been able to showcase them in two books --- a childrens book entitled Hiding Out that was first published in 2003 and Vanishing Act, which first came to bookstores in 2005, both of which have been translated into several languages and been extremely popular all over the world.

Besides, he is not done yet. The 61-year-old man continues to unearth natures beauties under lily pads, hiding into tree trunks or stealthily awaiting their prey in the white snow! Would you have been able to spot any of them had you not known they were in the photographs?

28. Some animals fool predators by ___________.

A. moving silently to them B. pretending to be friends

C. disguising themselves D. changing things around

29. How old was Art Wolfe when he began to take photos of these animals?

A. 61 B. 35 C. 29 D. 26

30. How did Art Wolfe feel when finding and filming these clever animals?

A. Easy and interesting. B. Hard and excited.

C. Dangerous and enjoyable. D. Complicated and boring.

31. The underlined word unearth in the last paragraph means _______________.

A. bury something in the ground B. have a close look at something

C. find something and make it known D. leave the earth for another planet

D

We know smoking cigarettes kills. So, manufacturers made electronic cigarettes as a safer smoking choice --- safer than tobacco. E-cigarettes contain the drug nicotine like cigarettes. But they dont use tobacco. And you dont light them. They are powered by battery.

So, if e-cigarettes are so safe, why have poison control centers around the United States seen an increase in telephone calls about e-cigarette poisonings? The answer is children.

Most of the calls are from people worried about children who have played with the devices. In the period of one month this year, the United States Centers for Disease Control (the CDC) says 215 people called the Center with e-cigarette concerns. More than half of these calls were for children aged below five. The devices apparently had made them sick.

Tim McAfee, director of the CDCs Office on Smoking and Health, says the problem is regulation (管控). The federal government doesnt control e-cigarettes even though they contain liquid nicotine. Mr. McAfree adds that liquid nicotine is a well-known danger. He explains that nicotine poisoning happens when the substance gets into the skin, gets into the eyes or is swallowed. Even a small amount can make a person sick. Nicotine poisoning can cause stomach pain or a sense of imbalance. Headaches and seizures (疾病的突然发作) are also common signs of nicotine poisoning. And too much nicotine can kill a person.

Tim McAfee says e-cigarettes dont create the level of risk to people that tobacco products do. He notes that almost 500,000 Americans die each year from cigarettes. Cigarettes are the winner in that contest. And we dont really know whats going to happen with e-cigarettes, he said.

E-cigarettes dont contain hundreds of harmful chemicals that are found in real cigarettes. So e-cigarettes are considered a useful tool for adults trying to end their tobacco use or quit.

But McAfee worries that teenagers may think electronic cigarettes are harmless. They could become addicted or hooked on the nicotine and then start smoking real cigarettes. In other words, he fears that, for young people, fake e-cigarettes could be a gateway to the real thing.

32. What can we learn from Paragraph 1 about e-cigarettes?

A. They dont contain nicotine.

B. They are much less expensive.

C. They are also made of tobacco.

D. They are devices with batteries.

33. The telephone calls received by the CDC complained about e-cigarettes _________.

A. safety issues B. influence on children

C. impact on environment D. harm on smokers families

34. Tim MaAfee proves his statement liquid nicotine is a well-known danger by _________.

A. giving examples B. listing its effects

C. analyzing its ingredients D. comparing it with solid nicotine

35. What does the underlined sentence Cigarettes are the winner in that contest. In Paragraph 5 mean?

A. Cigarettes cause more deaths than e-cigarettes.

B. Cigarettes contain more nicotine than e-cigarettes.

C. Cigarettes are smoked by more people than e-cigarettes.

D. Cigarettes are more popular with teenagers than e-cigarettes.

5 Tips for Helping Your Child Overcome Shyness

If you were a shy child yourself, then you would understand the fear, lack of trust, and isolation that affect your child. 36 It will have a bad effect on his or her friendships, the ability to have intimate relationships, success in work and overall satisfaction with life. By following the steps below, you can help your child effectively overcome shyness.

Become a trusted and responsive parent. If you are an adult who can be relied on to meet your childs needs and a parent who is caring and responsive, then the sense of trust your child has in you will naturally extend to others. 37 Never make him or her feel bad about being shy or push him or her to engage socially with others.

Be a role model for healthy interactions with others. 38 Teach your child how to approach others by doing it with him. Get down at their level and play with them until you see that your child feels comfortable.

Never introduce your child as being shy. 39 Even if your child is shy, labeling him or her as a shy person will not help him or her overcome shyness. Encourage your child to accept shyness as a truth about himself or herself and help him or her step beyond it.

Let your child play with others in a person-to-person way. A shy child may do better with another child one-on-one than in groups. 40 Children who are shy are able to handle being with another child for a certain amount of time, which can help your child learn how to build relationships with people who are worthy of his or her trust.

A. Be aware of how your child feels and respond to it.

B. Shyness left uncontrolled can affect a child for life.

C. Always remember that your child learns by watching you.

D. Children who are labeled are likely to become their labels.

E. So regularly invite other kids to your house for a short time.

F. In fact, families hurt children much more often than strangers.

G. Show your children that learning new skills from a class is a good thing.
